A bail hearing was set for September 15. The charges were laid foll- owing an August 14 incident in which the man's mother, Martha Webster of Zurich, was kidnapped and held host- age for about 90 minutes. She was released unharmed. The drama ended about 1:30 a.m, at nearby Varna when police from three OPP detachments surrounded a car containing a female host- age and forced a man to sur- render. Police said the incident began shortly before midnight Wednesday when they received a telephone call from Robert Farquhar, of Zurich who told them a man was at the home of Martha Webster and was holding a straight razor to the woman's throat. Arriving at the woman's home, police were told by the man through a window in a darkened room that he wanted a gun and a car. Police said the woman confirmed a razor was being held at her throat. Sgt. Norton Rhines of Ex- eter OPP said the man slashed the window screen with the razor and insisted he was serious. He said the man threatened to cut the wom- an's throat within 30 seconds if the car and gun were not produced. To prove he was serious, the police sergeant said, the man also threatened to cut the woman's fingers off and throw them through the screen. "We had no intention of giving the man a gun," Sgt. Rhines said Thursday. However, a half -ton pickup truck was provided by Mr. Farquhar. Police said the man and his hostage entered the truck and drove around Zurich for several minutes, then drove to Mr. Farquhar's home and attempted to get firearms. "We had to call his bluff there," said Sgt Rhines. He said the man, however, accepted a second vehicle owned by Aubrey Bedard of Zurich in exchange for the truck, which was low on fuel. Still accompanied by his hostage, the man drove east on Highway 84 to Huron County Road 31 and north to Varna before being forced to halt by Exeter OPP officers, assisted by Grand Bend and Goderich OPP. noomearaawnemagrammerr PUBLIC NOTICE VILLAGE OF ZURICH Re: Dogs Running at Large Linder By -Law No, 46, 1964, all Dogs in the Village of Zurich must be tied at all times of the year.
