Insects
"Home gardeners wanting to
eliminate a true insect pest --
aphids, for example --often use
insecticides that destroy not
only the target, but many kinds
of beneficial insects which perf-
orm a number of important
functions," says Dr. Laing,
an entomologist with the Dep-
artment of Environmental
Biology, Ontario Agricultural
College.
Some of these insects are pred-
atory and feed on harmful insects.
A ladybug, for instance, eats
aphids and mites which destroy
plants. Insects such as honeybees
and hoverflies perform the ess-
ential act of pollination. Finally,
insects through their digestive
systems begin the process of
breaking down organic matter
in the soil so that plants can
use it effectively.
If an insecticide has to be used
to get rid of an insect pest,
make sure it controls specific
pests. Treat for only one pest at a
time and make an attempt to
localize the destructive effects
