May protest Stanley land fill site
A handful of Stanley Township
residents plan to formally pres-
ent two petitions of protest
against a proposed sanitation
land fill site at a hearing on
the project before the Ontario
Municipal Board on July 15.
Bev Hill, one of the landowners
whose property will adjoin the
site if Council gets to go-
ahead for the dump. said that
the group was lodging a prot-
est based on environmental
reasons.

ing ground and if it's chang-
ed into a dump it could have a
detrimental effect on the wild
life," he said.
"The property [just west of
Varna), is mostly bush but
it has a stream running beside
it. Its natural environmental
aspects should be protected."
Mr Hill claims underground
springs in the area empty into
a nearby gully and said consid-
eration should be given to the
possibility that the pollutants
from the dump might not be
controlled from contaminating
the water.
"Some thought has to be
given to how the dump is going
to affect the property."
Mr. Hill added that the Ont-
ario ministry of the environ-
ment has proposed that a waste
management study be conduct-
ed in Huron County for six
to nine months at a cost of
535,000 and argued that perhaps
it would be wider if Council

The petitions come from
residents who live in the imm-
ediate area of the proposed
site and from people "further
down -stream. "he said, adding
that response to the petition
has not been great because
not much time or effort has been
put forward on it.
"Owners with adjoining land
cant 't be completely objective
on the issue," Mrs. Hill said.
"It's bound to be built beside
somebody and we don't want it
to seem like we're jumping on
the roof top and complaining
because it will ' be beside us.
We just want everything to be
taken into consideration before
a final decision is reached.
"We've no complaint that it
will be an eye sore, because
we're sure that the Township
would do an excellent job in
keeping the area clean," he said.
"It's just. that •we feel it's a
unique p iece of property that
should be saved, especially
since there are alternatives."
Mr. Hill said one suggestion
was to make an agreement with
Goderich Township to use its
Holmesville land fill site. The
municipality woluld pay for the
trucks to take the refuse down,
he said.
"Council has quoted figures
on how cheap it would be to
create a land fill site but has

atives available."
Mr. Hill said verbal protest
against the sanitation land fill
site has been made to Council,
but the petitions will formal-
ize their grievances..
