Bayfield discuss
legal survey
(by Milvena Erickson)
A legal surveys meeting was
held Saturday afternoon in the
old town hall, Bayfield, to keep
the ratepayers informed as to
what is happening to, and in,
the village. In 1972 an aerial
survey was done to establish
contouring for drainage purposes,
and the time has arrived when
the fixing of the positions of all
streets and lanes should be instit-
uted.
Municipal rights of ways would
be indicated by monuments in
proper places. There is concern
for those buildings of property
owners encroaching on village
road allowances, but the meeting
was assured that nothing would
change and would remain as it is
at present, except if a building
burns or deteriorates, then the
new building would have to con-
form to the zoning by-law.
It is also felt that the position-
ing of monuments at the corn-
ers of all street would make it
less costly and easier for resid-
ents to have their own lot lines
surveyed and fixed. There is no
intention at present to survey lot
lines within blocks on private
property.
The council proposes to start
the survey shortly and have rec-
eived an estimate cost of $20,
000 to do the 13 to 15 miles of
roads and lanes within the vill-
age limits. The money is in the
treasury, so there would be no
need to raise the mill rate in
future to cover the cost.
James N. Gairdner, Toronto,
supervisor of Special Services
Section, Legal Surveys Branch,
Ministry of Consumer and Com-
mercial Relations, was present
and explained that the Boundar-
ies Act provides for confirmation
of any legal lands in Ontario and
provides a good foundation for
surveying of individual propert-
ies which would be more effic-
ient, faster and less costly to
the property owner. He also

Time marches on, and we are
almost mid -way through the year

time when we look forward to
visitors dropping in on their way
to and from vacation spots.
We are still showing films on
Monday evening which the resid-
ents are enjoying, especially on
dull evenings when it is too cool
to be outside on the patio.
A bus ride was enjoyed on
Monday afternoon taking in the
areas of Grand Bend, Crediton,
Greenway and back home.
Residents from that area certainly
enjoy a trip back to their famil-
iar surroundings.
On Thursday evening, the
children from the.Zurich Men-
nonite Sunday School visited the
announced thatthe ministry woulc
give the village a 400/o grant of
the estimated cost rather than the
usual 25070 alloted for legal
surveys.
Jack Gray, London, an Ontario
Land Surveyor of the firm of
Archibald, Gray and -McKay, was
also present. He had established
the reference points required to
plot all the contours on the aer-
ial survey. He stated that the
originional survey of the village
had been done in 1832 and is not
accurate because of several curve:
et., and that the wooden markers
used at that time had deterior-
ated. He said that most survey-
ors were reluctant to survey in
the village because of the inacc-
uracy of the control points.
This new survey would change
all that and would establish legal
control points from which all
individual surveys could be done
accurately.
