Recreation survey for Tuckersmith
Residents of Tuckersmith
will have a chance to say wheth-
er or not they approve of their
township getting involved in
financing recreation activities
for township people.
At their meeting last Tuesday
night Tuckersmith councillors
decided to mail a questionnaire
to the 973 property owners in the
township, asking if they approve
raising the mill rate to contribute
to the costs of recreation prog-
rams used by township residents.
These would include arenas,
community centres, swimming
pools and other facilities as the
need or demand requires.
Before a levy would be placed
on the ratepayers 66 2/3 per
cent or more of the forms return-
ed must be in favour. The dead-
line for return of the forms is
June 30.
The need to contribute toward
recreation costs arose when Sea -
forth Council in April accepted
the recommendation of its Rec-
reation Committee and passed
a resolution levying a fee of
$15. per person per year for use
of the Seaforth arena for resid-
ents of non participating mun-
icipalities for sporting events.
Tuckersmith does not participate
in the maintenance and upkeep
of the arena.
Concern about the possibility
of water leaks in the Vanastra
water system prompted the coun-
cil to approve sending a resolut-
ion to the Ministry of the Env-
ironment asking the Ministry
to withdraw up to $1, 000 from
the Reserve Fund to conduct a
survey for leakage.
Acting on a complaint from.
Rev. Karl Boesma of Vanastra
asking that an old motor vehicle
on each property be removed.
Tenders for sub -contracts for
the Vanastra Day Care Centre
were approved, subject to the
approval of the Ministry of Soc-
ial Services. Brenner Mechanical
Contractor, Goderich, was award;
ed the contract for the heating
system at $2, 998 and for plumb-
ing at $2, 485.
Pfaff Electric Ltd., Electric,
was awarded the tender for the
electrical system at a price of
$3, 128.

Bedding plants
should be in
The garden center stampede
will soon be on, as eager garden-
ers rush to buy bedding plants
and set them out before the end
of May.
"Last year, vegetable transpl-
ants made up about 25 percent
of total bedding plant sales, "
says Ontario Ministry of Agricul-
ture and Food horticulturist D.
M. Sangster. "This indicates
that more people were planting
their own vegetables, so this
year gardeners who buy tomato,
pepper and onion varieties early
may have the best choice. How-
ever, there is no point in setting
out .most bedding plants before
you are sure that the danger of
frost is past."
Impatiens, marigolds, Ger-
aniums and petunias are the
most popular flowering bedding
plants. These, along with veg-
etable transplants, will be avail-
able in the usual openpak and
the new cell-pak which dispenses
each bedding plant with root
ball intact when the bottom of
each cell is pushed. Usually,
each pack contains six to eight
plants.
Read the labels on the pack.
They can assist you by providing
information about plant height
and color, suitability of locat-
ion and soil requirements.

Chamber of Commerce, I am
enclosing a copy of a challeng-
ing letter sent out by our Reeve,
Mr. R. Sharen, to Reeve F.E.
Haberer and Reeve John Tinney
in regard to a "Pre -Olympic Phys.
ique Contest."
This event will be held on our
beautiful beach during "Buffalo -
burger Fest, " an event sponsored
by our Grand Bend and Area

The contest is comparatively
simple in that the people who
are invited: to compete in the
contest will parade in front of
the audience. The applause will
select the winner of the event.
Sincerely,
W.C. Freele.
