Saving
energy'
Herbicides and other pesticides
require energy in their product-
ion. Thus it makes sense to use
them with discretion to save
energy as well as crop input
costs, say agricultural engineers
with the Ministry of Agriculture
and. Food.
Every crop producer in Ontario
is faced with decisions on herb-
icide use, many of which must bl
made before the crop is planted.
He must decide on the types
and quantities that will be safe
for the proposed crop, sufficient
for satisfactory weed control,
and safe for the next crop. He
must also decide if it will be
cheaper to band spray and count
on interrow cultivation for total
weed control,

While interrow cultivation is
often less expensive than total
chemical weed control, the busy
producer must decide if enough
time is available, and whether
or not there are side benefits
for his soil type. Research has
shown beneficial effects on
heavy clay soils where soil crust-
ing is a problem.
In the past, available time and
dollar cost has determined the
combination of herbicides and
cultivation. In the future a third
factor - energy- will be just as
important.
