Known as Farmer Bill's Greenhouses, the business has grown steadily to the point where it is now one of the biggest operations in the area. Garden firm expand faciiities Starting out a couple of years ago on a small scale as a mark- et gardener, Bill Rammelloo of Shipka is in the midst of great expansion and will soon have one of the largest green houses and garden centres in Western Ontario. Known as Farmer Bill's the greenhouse is located a mile and a quarter east of Shipka on Huron County Road 4, and will provide plants, flowers, shrubs, trees and everything a gardener needs. A third green house has been added recently giving Farmer Bill more than 10, 000 square feet of greenhouse floor space. He is in the process of obt- aining a complete line of trees, shrubs, and herbs to go along with more than 40, 000 -boxes of plants now under glass. Rammelloo says "we have everything a gardener needs. Potted plants Mother's Day is coming and you may be wondering what to give the special lady in your life. "Don't overlook that popular favorite --the potted plant, " advised Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food horticult- urist D.M. Sangster. "It is a lasting gift and sure to please." The yellow -flowered Princess Anne and the white -flowered Winter Carnival are by far the most popular Chrysanthemums available. However, there are rhany other 'mum varieties to choose from, including the new ones with daisy -like flowers. Hydrangeas produce large showy pink, white or blue blooms that last much longer if the plants are kept well - watered. TED VOOGEL AND SONS LTD. The Rammelloo greenhouses now hold a large number of hanging baskets and many nov- elty flowering and gardening plants. One interesting item is a Venus flytrap. The flytrap is a small plant which lives on flies and literally gobbles up any stray insects. It is being imported from North Carolina and grows in a special peat moss. Tomato, cabbage and span- ish onion plants are now ready for replanting in area gardens. Plant fruit trees in mid-May for best results Fruit trees should be set out in home gardens in mid-May. "For the best results, buy quality trees and follow recom- mended planting procedures, " advises Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food horticult- urist D.M. Sangster. "Because fruit trees need good drainage, avoid planting sites with heavy clay soils that retain water and inhibit new root formation." Dig a large hole for each tree to allow plenty of room for THURSDAY, MAY 8, 1975 root development. Spread a good loam soil around the roots before filling in the hole. After planting, water the "tree with one and one-half to two gallons of water. Prune newly planted trees back to assure a good,bal- ance between the tops and root systems to stimulate adequate regrowth. Fruit trees do not need fertilizer during the first year. For proper pollination, plant two varieties of apples, pears, sweet cherries, and plums. Peaches, apricots, and sour cherries are self -fertile and require only one variety. For further information on poll- ination requirements, consult your nurseryman.
