UNIT I OF U. C. W,
The May meeting of Unit I
of St. Andrew's United Church
Women met at the Manse on
Thursday, May 1 with 19 mem-
bers present. Mrs. J. Reddoch
and Mrs. Elva Metcalf were in
charge of the devotional period,
Mrs. G. Duggan in the int-
roduction to the speaker, Mrs.
Doris MacDougall, read from
several poems. The idea for the
meeting originated from one of
the members who had recently
read "All Creatures Great and
Small" and it's sequel "All
Things Bright and Beautiful" by
James Herriott, who had taken
his title from the familiar hymn
beginning with those two lines,
"All Things Bright and Beautiful,
All creatures great and small,
by Cecil Frances Alexander.
Mrs. MacDougall then told
of her husbands interest in blue-
birds once so common to our •
area, but due to several things --
fence posts once favourite nest-
ing spots --now rapidly disapp-
earing and fewer small orchards
plus the fact that an exceeding-
ly cold and late spring in 1958
took it's toll. Early in 1969 Mr.
MacDougall began putting out
boxes in this area and this past
year a very active organization
has been building and placing
boxes in a wide area throughout
the county. Mrs. MacDougall
reported on an interview . Mr.
MacDougall, president of the
Bluebird Society and Mrs. Betty
Burch, secretary had with Rene
Jones, the district biologist with
the Ministry of Natural Resource:
over CKNX. The response and
letters of encouragement was
most gratifying.

talk with the reading of the
hymn which concludes with this
verse. He gave us eyes to see
them, and lips that we might
tell. How great is God Almighty;
Who has made all things well."
After a short period of business
the meeting was closed with the
benedictidn. Lunch was served.
In conversation with Mrs.
Ken Brandon on Monday, we
learned that the five members
of her family who are hospital-
ized following the fire in their
home, are all improving.
She said that everyone has been
so wonderful that words were
inad&.luate to express their
feelings of gratitude for the
many kindnesses to them. We
also understand from a member
of the Bayfield Lions Club, that
a Benefit Dance will he held
for the Brandon family on Fri-
day evening, May 30 in the
Community Centre.
Mr. and Mrs. Tom Noble,
St. Marys and Mr. and Mrs.
John Scarrow and Jason, Seaford
were Sunday visitors with Mr.
and Mrs. Rob Irwin and Robbie.
Mrs, Andre Deseck, St.
Clair Shores, Michigan, visited
with relatives in the Village on
Sunday.
