Education Week at South Huron
The theme of education week
this year is the school and the
community. South Huron main-'
tains a close relationship with
the general community. The
use of the school by various
groups and organizations is
extremely heavy. The school
is used virtually every night and
every weekend by recreational
groups, municipal organizations
church groups and many other
people.
In addition between 700 and
800 people took part in the
evening class program this year.
Some of these courses were tak-
en for credit towards the grade
12 or grade 13 diploma. Most
of the courses, however, were
not taken for credit but were
still courses or recreational
courses. South Huron has tried
to offer courses which are of
interest. We would welcome
suggestions for additional prog-
rams.
Although courses are offered
for credit in evening classes
and through Ministry of Educat-
ion correspondence courses it
is possible for anyone regardless
of their age or regardless. of the
time that they have been out
of school to return to secondary
school either full time or part
time. It is also possible to be
granted credits toward your
secondary school graduation
diploma based on work exper-
ience.
If you are interested in obtaini
ing further information about
returning to school, or about the
credits that may be granted for
work experience, please call
the school. South Huron's guid-
ance staff, or the principal or
vice-principal would be pleased
to provide you with information
concerning credits needed for
the grade 12 or grade 13 diploma
We would be pleased to answer
your questions about post secon-
dary education, apprenticeship
or any other question related to
education.
South Huron offers a broad
range of academic, technical
and commercial courses. We
would be pleased to enrol adult
students who would like to take
one or more courses during the
day.
There are many events forth-
coming at the school during the
next few weeks. Every Saturday
there will be a wrestling prograrrl
operated for elementary school
students. On Wednesday evening,,
the South Huron wrestling club
meets; this group is open to the
public and consists of wrestlers
and those interested in wrestling,
On May 29 and 30 there will
be a presentation by the schools
theatre classes. Please watch
for further information.
The annual Spring Formal
will be presented by the Stud-
ent's Council on May 16. During
the week of May 12 some South
Huron students will be working
with various local businesses
and industries. This program is
part of their commercial and
technical training.
Englisl 'students will be visit-
ing the Shaw Festival and the
Stratford Festival several times
in May and June.
Other activities include part-
icipation in the spring athletics
These include badminton,
track and soccer. The Physical
Education staff is organizing
tournaments in volleyball and
wrestling for local elementary
schools this month and in May.
We will also be staging our
annual Senior Outers expedition
to Norther Ontario during
the week of May 19.
We welcome spectators and
visitors to these events. If fur-
ther information is required
about any of these please call
the school. We have mentioned
only a few of the activities
that are coming up in the near
future. Other events include
visits to the Robarts School in
London, the student blood donor
clinic, field trips to the
London Life and other offices
for commercial students, scienc
field trips, geography field
trips and other events. These
various special activities dem-
onstrate that students and teach-
ers are involved with a major
programme which supplements
the regular course work. Many
of these activities involve•the
school in the life of the com-
munity at large.
The community provides
teachers and students with an
expanded classroom. South
Huron believes in utilizing the
resources of the immediate
area as well as the resources of
more distant places. Senior
History students recently return-
ed from a field trip to Washing-
ton p. C. They returned with
an enlarged appreciation of
American ideals and American •
problems. Other students will

Learning takes place both in
the classroom and beyond.
Even in the classrooms, the
teacher brings to the student
the resources of the larger com-
munity when guest speakers
and instructors are invited to
classes. Separation of the com-

ed fragments of society is not
possible nor sensible. Students
learn from the people who
come into the school with spec-
ial knowledge. They learn by
going out into the larger com-

Education is a process involv-
ing all of the resources avail-
able to individuals. Education
is not the narrowly defined proc-
ess of simply going into a

there. Education should, of
course, go on for people all of
their lives. Schools should point
the way. The School and the
community should be closely
and mutually involved in the
process.
