Zurich Flyers win championship
over Shipka in seven game series
The Zurich Flyers won the
South Huron Hockey League
championship last Friday night
in the local arena when they
dumped the Shipka Colonials
5-3 in the seventh and deciding
game of the series. Winning
the championship climaxed
a most successful season for the
local squad, who also won the
league title by ending up in
first place at the end of the
regular schedule.
The series was a ding-dong
battle all the way, with Zurich
taking an early two -game lead,
only to have Shipka come back
strong and win the next three.
With their backs to the wall
last Tuesay night the Flyers
came through with an easy 8-5
victory in the sixth game of the
series, to tie it up at three
games each and set the stage
for the Friday night marathon.
More than 1, 000 paid admit-
tances had plenty to cheer
about on Friday night as the
Flyers jumped into a one -goal
lead near the end of the first,
and increase the margin to 3-0
by the end of the second.
Shipka out -scored the locals
3-2 in the third session.
Ron Desjardine paced the
Zurich offensive with two big
goals, while Glen Overholt,
Ron Rader and Ken Srnale each

Hill continued "I think the
Ministry is making sincere at-
tempts to update legislation.
There may be just cause for
delay.
Chairman Wilfred Shortreed
commented "Legislation is
coming down some Tuesday. It's
been corning • for three or four
years."
The board decided Monday to
set up an ad hoc committee to
investigate the implications of
the proposed power generating
stations for Huron.
Discussion took place after
receiving a brief from the Huron
Power Plant Committee's
chairman Adrian Vos.
Mrs. Dorothy Wallace was the
first to speak saying, "This is a
serious matter. We should be
taking a stand on it."
Chairman Shortreed added,
"An influx like Bruce could have
a real impact on our educational
system."
In discussing the size of the
committee, Shortreed said, "I
think we should have more than
three members. I would like to
add to get more expertise."
Supplement salaries
The board agreed to sup-
plement salaries of members of
the custodial and secretarial
staffs who are covered by
collective agreement.
These employees will receive
an additional 835 per month for
the duration of the contract. Part-
time employees will also be
covered on a pro -rata basis.
In explaining the move Cayley
Hill said, "This is not an
amendment to the collective
agreement, but a board decision
to provide salary supplements in
keeping with economic trends of
the times."
A number of field trips planned
by Huron students were ap-
proved. They include South
Huron and Central Huron
secondary schools and Hullett
Central , Turnberry Central -and
Brussels public schools.
The SHDHS trip for Senior
Outers is to Killarney Provincial
park for one week. In asking for
approval of this trip, superin-
tendent R. B. Allan suggested the
effects of this and other longer
trips be appraised by the
education committee.
In addition the board agreed to
support the Goderich high school
drama club financially

scored one. Bill Bowden, Peter
Gill and Dalton scored the
three goals for Shipka.
The two teams battled on
even terms throughout the big-
gest part of the first period,
and finally at the 18.42 mark
Desjardine scored his first goal
with assists from Bob Farquhar
and Pat Bedard, The big turning
point in the game carne near
the end of the first session when
Shipka's classy centre, Larry
Laye, was given a major and
also a match penalty for butt -
ending. The loss of Laye for
the balance of the game was a
big blow for the Colonials,
and they never fully recovered
their first -period drive in the
balance of the game.
With Shipka still short-handed
at the 3.33 mark of the second
period Desjardine banged in his
second goal on a passing play
from Richard Schilbe. At 13.02
they made the score -board
read 3-0 when Glen. Overholt
slapped in a pass from Schilbe
and McKinnon on a power play.
Zurich carne out cautious in
the third period, and their def-
• ensive efforts back -fired on
them when Shipka scored at 9. 03
with Bowden finding the range.
At this point the Flyers went
back on the offensive and Ron
Rader found the range at 14, 04
with Ken Smale and Kevin
McKinnon drawing assists. Two
minutes later Smale slapped in
a pass from Schilbe and Rader
to make the score -board read
5-1 for the locals. The Colon-
ials roared back with two quick
goals at the 18, 05 mark and
again at the 18.43 rnark, to
round out the scoring in the
game.
Glen Gascho came up with
many outstanding saves in the
Zurich nets, and "on several
occasions thwarted a Shipka
breakaway to keep the locals
in a winning position.
Even though there were a
total of 23 penalties called,
the game was not the rough and
tough type of contest many fans
expected to see. Zurich picked
up 10 minors, while Shipka
picked up a total of 11 minors,
one major and one match pen-
alty. In addition, their goal -
tender, Joe Arnold, was assess-
ed a gross misconduct penalty
at the end of the game, for his
attempted assault on the refer-
ees.
