The highlight of the evening was our guest speaker, Miss Adrienne Van Raay, who is a student at the University of Waterloo majoring in Therap- eutic Recreation Halist. She is four months in study and workin four months at C,P,R.I. in London in the work she is maj- oring in. She gave a very informative talk on what recreation is. And as we all know it does not mean phys-ed such as basketball or volleyball, etc. It means touch more, any activity that a pers- on participates in voluntarily and as a result experiences personal satisfaction and a sense of well being. In her work at C.P,R,I, she helps children with many prob- lems. Her work means to give theperson means of expressing his or her self and to enhance growth and development of the individaul, and in it it revokes interest that has laid dormant for years. She outlined three areas of recreation: (1) Relaxation: No activities means no goal, so to benefit you must assume proper frame of mind to harmonize with yourself. One can feel guilty and say 1 should be something else. (2) Development: Expression of personality in freedom and a dynamitic spirit can add to creat- ive learning. If a child likes to play with a musical instrument, this person is given a chance to do it and in this way he or she ;is developing their own person- ality. (3) Activity Programming: This program is to promote lead- ership and develop skills and it provides a setting for the patient to meet social needs. Adrienne is a very devoted person and is qualified for this work. She has much love for her fellowmen. Her expression gives everyone the feeling that we can all help in someway to make this world a better place to live in. She was thanked by Mrs. Miller and presented with a small gift.
