HomeMy WebLinkAboutZurich Citizens News, 1975-04-10, Page 9THURSDAY, APRIL 10, 1975 ZURICH CITIZENS NEWS PAGE 9 Ontario ministry will sponsor junior program This year the Ontario Min- istry of Agriculture and Food will once again be sponsoring the Junior Agriculturalist Prog- ram during the summer of 1975. The program is designed to prov- ide a practical learning exper- ience for young people from non-farm homes who have a serious interest in agriculture, and who have had no experience working on a farm. As a Junior Agriculturalist, a person will be placed on a selected commercial farm, where he/she will perform reg- ular activities relative to that farm operation. In addition, a Junior Agriculturalist will have ' an opportunity to develop an appreciation of rural life will have an opportunity to develop an appreciation of rural life through living with a farm fam- ily, and through participating in the local 4-1-1 and Junior Farmer programs and in other rural activities. The prospective Junior Agric- ulturalist will be either boys or girls 16 and 17 years of age and must be in good physical and mental condition in order to withstand the vigorous physical effort. Selection will be based in part oh their reasons for being interested in agriculture arid their plans for further education and a career. All Junior Agriculturalists will be required to participate in an orientation program to help prepare them for their farm stay. This program will be held about mid-June and on-farm assign- ment will be for a nine week period, commencing on June 23 and terminating on August 23, 1975. A Junior Agriculturalist will be assigned, wherever possible, to a farm with the type of enter- prise (s) in which she/he is most interested. The duties involved will vary considerably depending on the individual farm operation, the demonstrated ability of the Junior Agriculturalist, and the sand of enterprises found on the farm. Even the poor robins and other spring birds will be wondering if their , instincts have led them astray. On Monday evening films were shown followed by refresh- ments. On Tuesday, April 1, the Ladies Auxiliary held their regular monthly meeting. A program was presented in the dining room consisting of Mrs. Keith Gingerich and her family Audrey, Helen, Ruth and Paul who rendered musical numbers. Mrs. Mary McKinnon gave an enjoyable reading. Mrs. Theluu Thiel, Mrs. Pearl Gingerich anc Mrs. Gertrude Fleischauer gath- ered around the piano and sang an off key "April Fool" to the accompaniment of Mrs. Mary McKinnon which created a lot of merriment amongs the residents. Following refresh- ments, the Auxiliary adjourned to the hobby shop to conduct the business part of the meeting. On Wednesday afternoon we were surprised to have visitors Each Junior Agriculturalist will receive a training allow- ance of $16 a day, based on a six day week. Everyone Welcome asammaussommuummaimi from Switzerland in conjunction with the Swiss T.V. networks. Because of the varied languages covered by their networks, there were three people in their party. The lady spoke solely German, the camerman spoke only French and the other gentleman was bi-lingual and spoke French, German, Italian and English. Some T.V. filming was done in the Home, and Mr. Risi who is able to converse in their home language, was inter- viewed. These people were particularly interested in infor- mation concerning Zurich, Ont- ario, to take back to Zurich, Switzerland. They braved the storm from Toronto to visit us before leaving for other parts of Canada. The sympathy of residents and staff is extended to the family of the late Mrs, Isabella Westlake. Any plans we had for outside activities during the latter part of the week were squelched by 'the worst blizzard of the year which prevailed throughout most of the area, On Friday evening, bingo was played followed by refresh- ments. The Sunday evening chapel service was conducted by Rev. Barry Robinson of Thames Road United Church, Some of the choir members attended the service and provided music accompanied on the organ by Miss Agnes Bray.
