Playoff series tied at two each
After three more garnes play-
ed in South Huron Hockey
League finals, the Shipka Col-
onials and Zurich Flyers are all
tied up at two wins each. On
Thursday night the Colonials
came out on top with a 6-4
score. Tuesday night the Shipka
crew won the fourth game of the
series to tie the round at two
wins each.
The fifth game in the best -
of seven series will be played
in the local arena on Sunday
afternoon, with the sixth sched-
uled for the same location
Tuesday night. If the series
goes the full seven games the
final battle will take place on
Friday night, April 11.
SHIPKA 6 - ZURICH 4
On Tuesday night Shipka
spotted the Flyers two goals in
the first period and then carne
from behind to register their
6-4 victory. Dick Bedard, with
two big goals, was thdiig spark
in the Zurich attack.
Bedard scored his first goal
at the 4.17 mark of the first
period when he slapped in a
pass from Glen Overholt and
Jim Ranier. At 13.25 Kevin
McKinnon scored on a pass
from Overholt to give the locals
a 2-0 lead going into the sec-
ond session.
The middle stanza was only
two minutes old when Peter
Gil scored for the Colonials,
and four minutes later Stan
Lovie banged in a pass from Bob
Lovie and Barry Clark to tie the
count at 2-2. Just past the mid-
way mark Overholt tipped in a
pass from Pat Bedard and Rich
Schilbe to give Zurich the
lead temporarily, but 52 sec-
onds later Larry Laye shot the
Colonials right back into a 3-3
tie. With only 40 seconds rem-
aining in the second Murray
Packman scored from John Beck-
er to give Shipka a lead which
they hung onto for the balance
of the game.
Both teams tried hard in the
first half of the final stanza,
but it took until the 14;15 .nark
before Shipka found the range
with the Flyers playing short-
handed. Bill Bowden was the
marksman. The final goal for
the Colonials was scored by
Dan Dalton at the 15.46 mark
with the locals still short-hand-
ed due to a major penalty call-
ed against Ron Rader. Thirty
seconds later Dick Bedard fired
in his second goal of the game,
but the Flyers failed to muster
enough power to tie the score
in the final three and a half
minutes.
Nine minor penalties were
called against each team, and
in addition Zurich were assess-
ed a major and a match pen-
alty to Rader for spearing.
Players and fans alike were un-
happy with the penalties called
by referee Pat O'Brien, espec-
ially in the third period.
ZURICH 6- SHIPKA 4
Sparked by the outstanding
offensive play of Pat Bedard
and Rich Schilbe, the Zurich
Flyers won the third game of
the series on Sunday afternoon,
6-4. Along with their fine
effort the locals were backed
up with brilliant netminding
by Glen Gascho, who many
times turned aside sure -goals
by the Colonials.
The first period was only four
minutes and 32 second old when
Pat Bedard rifled in a pass from
Ron Desjardine to give the Flyer.
an early lead. Less than three
minutes later Schilbe grabbed
the pucl< from being his own
net and stick -handled his way
to the other end of the ice surf-
ace, easily beating Joe Arnold
on his solo effort. The goal
was one of the nicest scored in
the local arena for some time.
With only a minute and a half
left in the initial stanza Larry
Laye scored from. Bill Bowden
and Stan Lovic to ]<cep the
Shipka Lopes alive.
At the .5G mark of the sec-
ond period Glen Overholt conv-
erted a pass from Schilbe and
Kevin McKinnon to give the
a3-1 lead,but at 7.54

the Colonials roared right back
with Murray Packman finding
the range. With five minutes
left in the session Glen Overholt
banged in a pass from. Pat
Bedard and Schilbe, and then
with only six -seconds remaining
Bowden scored from a scramble
in front of the Zurich net to
keep Shipka crc right in the
game.
Bob Farquhar fired the locals
into a 5-3 lead at the 6.18
marl< of the third period when lit

Thirty-seven seconds later the
Colonials carne right back into
contention with Bowden scored
his second goal of the game.
The big turning point in the
game came a few minutes later
when Gascho foiled Jim Guenth-
er on a clear-cut breakaway to
keep the Flyers in the lead. A
few minutes after this miss the
Flyers scored an assurance goal
with Desjardine banging in a
pass from Pat Bedard.
A total of 16 minor penalties
were handed out in the game
with Shipka picking up nine and
Zurich six.
SHIPKA 6- ZURICH 4
Zurich was 60 seconds away
from winning the second game
in the series last Thursday night
in the local arena, when the
Colonials banged in the equali-
zer to force the game into
overtime. Two Zurich players,
Glen Overholt and Rich Schilbe,
were serving minor penalties
when the visitors tied the score.
Dan Dalton scored what prove
to be the winning market at the
1.34 marl< in the overtime sess-
ion, and then. at 5.11 Peter Gil
added •an insurance goal, to
give Shipka their 6-4 lead.
Thw two teams battled on
even terms throughout the first
period, with neither being able
to find the range. It took until
the 12.37 marl< of the second
period before Jim Guenther
finally found the range for Ship-
ka, and then about four minutes
later Peter Gil scored his first
of three goals to give the Col-
onials a 2-0 lead. With only
30 seconds remaining in the
middle stanza Ron Desjardine
banged in a pass from Pat Bed-
ard and Rich Schilbe to bring
the Flyers back into the game.
At the 1.10 mark of the third
period Pat Bedard clicked on a
pass from Desjardine to tie the
game at 2-2. With Glen Over-
holt serving one of his four
minor penalties, Bill Bowden
shot the visitors into a 3-2
lead at 7.00 minutes of the
third, but 42 seconds later Kev-
in McKinnon tied the score for
the Flyers with Bob Farquhar
and Ken Smale assisting on the
play. Desjardine scored what
looked like the winning goal
at the 13.16 mark when he
rifled home a pass from Pat
Bedard and Schilbe.
The big blow came at the 19.
00 mark of the third when Peter
Gil scored his third goal of the
game for Shipka to tie the' score
at 4-4, and forced the overtime
session.
Zurich picked up nine minor
penalties throughout the game,
while Shipka were assessed
eight minors, one major and a
match penalty to Steve Kadlecil
for spearing.
