Less accidents
Fatalities resulting from
collisions involving motorized
snow vehicles were down 52
per cent over the first three
months of the 1974-75 winter
season compared to the same
period in 1973-74, it was ann-
ounced by Ministry of Transpor-
tation and Communications.
During this period, October
20 to February 8, injuries result-
ing from snowmobile collisions
were down 39 per cent, while
property damage collisions were
down 31 per cent.
From. all reported collisions
on and off the highway, fatal-
ities dropped from 25 "in 1973-74
to 12 this season; 263 personal
injuries from 431; and 115 prop-
erty damage collisions from 167.
"We hope that these sizeable
reductions indicate snowmobil-
ers are exercising a greater
degree of responsibility when
enjoying winter recreation, "
stated Transportation and Com-
munications Minister John R.
Rhodes.
He added" Some people may
think the snowmobile accidents
are greatly reduced because of
the mild winter we've had, but
I'm convinced the new regulat-
ions which carne into effect in
December have contributed to
the decrease.
Under the new regulations,
snowmobiles were prohibited
from driving on the shoulder of
a King's Highway. During the
past several years, many of the
fatalities and injuries occurred
in such areas with snowmobiles
running into parked cars,
And helmets must now be
worn by all operators and pass-
engers when operating on the
roadway or a public trail . .
The new legislation contains
authority for additional control
and regulation which will come
into effect next season . The
new controls will relate to
identification of the vehicle
as well as driver licensing and
age limits.
