metric,

signs to be converted.

especially in the realm of pack-
aging. Toothpaste, for example
now comes measured in mill-
imetres in only five sizes,
compared with about 30 pack-
age sizes before,
This fall sugar and some
other goods will be packaged
in metric sizes. Sample high-
way signs in kilometres already
are up in most provinces.

keeper, for example, will incur
expenses when he has to conv-
ert his measuring scales.
Three sites have been chosen
for pilot projects to investigate
the problems involved in this
type of change -over. They are
Sherbrooke, Que., Peterbor-
ough and Kamloops, B.C.,
Larger organizations such as
Ontario Hydro are considered
large enough to absorb the
costs involved.
Speedometers offer perhaps
the smallest problem. A metric
spokesman said those in 1976
cars will be converted to kilo-
metres only or in combination
with the mileage scale. Manu-
facturers are expected to offer
transparent overlays with a
kilometre reading for use in
older cars. They may cost
about $1,50.
Many elementary schools
already teach the metric syst-
em. Mr. Park says most kinder -
