Award
contract
Bell Aerospace Canada Ltd.,
of Grand Bend has been awarded
a $73, 000 contract to design
an air -cushioned platform which
.could be added to an icebreaker
to increase its effectiveness,
a transport department official
said in Ottawa.
The success of the Voyageur,
an air cushioned vehicle devel-
oped by Bell Aerospace, which
has been used to supply isolated
communities in Quebec this
winter, prompted the contract.
The Voyageur is useful in
confined areas, such as harbors
although it cannot be used
extensively in the Arctic be-
cause of a small fuel tank, the
official said.
The air cushioned vehicle
also has been used successfully
in Parry Sound and Montreal the
past two years.
CONSCIENTIOUS FARMER
" Farmers who are only carry-
ing out normal farm procedures
have nothing to fear from off-
icials of the Ministry of the
Environment, said Ontario
Environment Minister Bill
Newman.
Recently, some farmers have
expressed concern over their
practice of spreading manure
over fields and the possible
' resulting odor. Environment
Ontario officials point out that
this concern is essentially need-
less worry. Normal manure
spreading and subsequent cultiv-
ation is both necessary and beneā¢
ficial for farm operation. Area
residents are asked to show
consideration towards this pract-
ice.
However, a small percentage
of farmers do not follow norm-
al farm procedure and this
could lead to a valid complaint
by a neighboring resident.
Ministry officials will invest-
igate and advise the farmer to
correct the situation. In most
instances the farmer will follow
the advice of the official and
the situation is quickly remed-
ied.
For farmers who refuse to
accept the advice of the officc-
ial, an independent body called
the Farm Pollution Advisory
Committee will be called in.
