Receive
allotment
Huron -Perth Roman Catholic
separate school board learned
Monday night that the province
has granted it $213, 000 for
school improvements and ext-
sions in 1975.
The allotment fell short of
the $1, 025, 000 requested for
additional library and gymnas-
ium facilities.
Director of education John
Vintar said the board fared
better than last year when it
was allotted $50, 000 after
requesting $945, 000.
"Last year we got practically
nothing, " he said. "At least
this year we weem to be doing
better.
The matter was referred to
the board's building and property
committee to decide which
projects have highest priority
and should be begun this year.
Trustees also formulated
replies to a questionnaire from
the Ontario School Trustees
Council in an attempt to deter-
mine board attitudes to teacher -
board relations.
Trustees also decided in
favor of increasing pressure on
Educatinn Minister Thomas
Wells to prohibit teachers from
sitting on school boards.
They decided tat while
some means of controlling the
number of teachers on boards
was preferable to an outright
ban, the risk of having teachers
enter salary negotiations on
behalf of a board should be
avoided.
The board also decided:
* Principals should be excl-
uded from teachers° federations,
even if they teach, because of
a possible conflict between
their management and employ-
ee roles.
* The system of teacher sal-
aries being set by contract as
well as collective agreement
should be replaced solely by
collective agreements.
* Professional negotiators to
act on behalf of school boards
are not required in teacher
salary negotiations. Trustees
felt it is best to deal with sal-
aries at the local level to retain
a more friendly atmosphere.
OPERATION MEDICINE CHEST
Cleaning out the medicine
chest at frequent intervals is
an important safety measure
advises Consumers' Association
of Canada. Leftover medicines
may be used at a later date
with a doctor's consent but
some medicines lose their pot-
ency within as short a period
as two weeks. Lotions and
ointments and most non-pres-
cription tablets, if stored in a
dry, cool place, will remain
potent for a year.
