News from Huron Hope
(by Eleanor Scott, principal)
February was another busy
month here at school.
The children in the junior
class cooked pancakes in their
classroom and ate them with
great enjoyment on Shrove
Tuesday.
Unfortunately the notices
about the Valentine Party were
not sent home as classes were
cancelled due to very unsettled
weather the day before. How-
ever, we had our party and
cooked buns to eat with jam.
We have seen some exception.
ally good movies this month.
The children especially enjoyed
the story of,a merry-go-round
horse that came to life after
being well loved by a little boy.
The cancellation of transport-
ation on February 13 brought
to mind our stay of three days
in the school during the 1971
blizzard. Since that time we
have added considerably to our
equipment. We now have in the
classroom, a number of kitchen
utensils, including a hot plate,
an electric frying pan and a
blender. We also keep a supply
of food on hand. We have a
refrigerator with a freezer
compartment and of course, our
own washer and dryer. Should
the need arise we could accom-
modate the children quite com-
fortably.

choose food to prepare each
Friday. This month they have
had scalloped potatoes, sausages

reminds us that parking lights
are NEVER enough for driving.
If you need lights, you need
full headlights. Turn them on
before sunset, so other cars
can see YOU.
Polyurethane foam cushions
will protect the floor of your
trunk from sharp objects.
If your door lock freezes in
cold climes, hold the key in a
pair of pliers (or asbestos
gloves) and heat with a match
or cigarette lighter. The key
will thaw its way in.
Better drivers coming up - ap-
proximately 2.3 million
students completed driver's
education courses during the
'72-'73 school year.
Driving an older car? Use a
tankful of leaded gas every
three or four fill -ups to protect
the car's valves (lead deposits
act as lubrication).
A good tune-up protects your engine,
too, and will give you better more
economical performance with any
fuel. Put YOUR car's engine in the
hands of the experts at Larry Sniders.

Eight of our pupils went to
the Special Olympics at the
University of Western Ontario
on Saturday, February 15.
They all competed in skating
and Cindy and Susan won third
place medals in their division.
Each participant received an
Olympic crest and a Western
cap. A hot meal was provided
at noon to more than 500
people involved as well as a
snack of donuts and hot chocol-
ate.
The photographer from Strath-
roy was in the McCurdy School
this week and was able to take
individual pictures of our pupils
as well as a group picture. I
am sorry that I was unable to
give you prior notice as the
children usually like to dress
up for their pictures. The
photographer took time to pose
each child carefully and I
think we will again have some
good portraits.
Notice: School will dismiss

Seat • -Its - an greater safety
•
This is . t Ontario is doing
to make sure people know it
and - ar them!
In 1973, 2000 people were killed and nearly
100,000 injured in car accidents here in
Ontario! Tragic? Sure. But even more tragic
when you consider that many of these
people could have been saved by one simple
action. Buckling a seat belt.
Scientific evidence proves that seat belts
reduce the chance of death or injury in a car
accident by 50%!
•
So your Ontario Government is spon-
soring an intensive educational program to
persuade drivers and passengers—and
children, too—to wear a seat belt even on
short drives.
The symbol of this program is the sign
shown. it's a reminder to "Buckle up for
safety." You'll be seeing it often along
Ontario streets and highways.
It's part of a plan to help protect you, your
family, and everyone in the province—to
help Ontario residents live better, longer.
And to make doubly -sure of it, the govern-
ment has prepared interesting, informative
booklets, a film, and a special school pro-
gram on the importance of wearing a seat
belt.
