Zurich Flyers win opening game against Exeter
The Zurich. Flyers drew first
blood in their best -of -seven
playoff series against Exeter
Mohawks on Sunday afternoon
in the local arena, when they
came through with a thrilling
corse -front -behind 7-6 victory.
The second game in the series
is scheduled for Exeter on
Friday night, and the third
game will be played back in
Zurich on Sunday afternoon' at
2 p.tn.
An outstanding performance
by Percy Bedard in the Zurich
nets, especially in the last 10
minutes of the game, was the
big difference in the two teams.
At one point in the first period,
the Flyers were trailing 4-1 but
determination paid off and by
the 1.50 mark of the third per-
iod the locals had tied the
game at 5-5.
Zurich banged in the first
goal of the game early in the
first period when Ron Desjard-
ine slapped in a pass from Pat
Bedard at the .44 second mark.
For the rest of the period,
however, it was Exeter all the
way as they banged in four
quick goals in eight minutes.
Two goals by Jack Glover and
then single markers by Larry
Willert and Brad Datars gave
the visitors their 4-1 lead. With
a minute and a half left in the
first session Jim Ramer capital-
ized on a pass from Rich Schilbe
and narrowed the count to 4-2.

in the second period and at
the 1.31 mark Ken Swale came
through on a beautiful pass
from Rod Chapman and Ron
Rader to make the scoreboard
read 4-3 for the Mohawks. A
little past the midway mark
Exeter again blinked the red
light with Glover picking up
his third goal of the game.
Neither team could manage to
score for the rest of the period
although the Flyers pressed hard
to get back in the contest.
The third period was only 25
seconds old when Pat Bedard
banged in a pass from Rich
Schilbe, and then in the next
five minutes the locals scored
three more to give them a 7-5
lead by the 5.15 mark. Bob
Farquhar scored on a pass from •
Ron Rader, Rader then capitaliz-
ed on a passing play with Rod
Chapman, and Ron Desjardine
scored what proved to be the
winning marker with Glen Over-
holt earning the assist.
At the 10.45 mark with the
Exeter crew pressing hard Gary
Parsons was left uncovered in
front of the Zurich net and he.
made no mistake in banging
in a rebound from Milze Cush-
man. From that point on Percy
Bedard carne up with many
superlative saves as the visitors
kept up a constant attack on
the Zurich net. A penalty call-
ed against the locals with less
than a minute left in regulat-
ion time made the situation
still worse, as the Mohawks

scored near the end to put them
out front, then Zurich scored
two goals in the second period

the first, then near the end of
the period, with Zurich two

a lucky shot from behind the

a few seconds played in the
last period, Drayton scored to
tie the game. however, Zurich
kept the edge in play, and with
only 22 second left in the game
Kerry Bedard got the winner,
assisted by Len Van Wonderen.
pulled their goalie and staged
a desperate effort to knot the
score. Bedard proved to be a
big stumbling block and he kept
the puck out of the net despite
the manpower edge the Exeter
crew held,
Ron Desjardine was the only
local to score more than one
goal, while defensively Rich
Schilbe carne through with an
outstanding performance both
in breaking up opposing plays
and spearheading the local's
attacks.
Only 11 minor penalties were
handed out in the well -played
game with six of them going to
the Flyers and five to the visit-
ors.
In the other playoff series the
Shipka Bears are playing the
Centralia College six, and the
winners of the two series will
meet for the South Huron
