Too many other people can remember. " "A little town is where people with various ailments can air them properly to sympathetic ears." That's nice to remember." "A little town is where it is hard for anybody to walk to work for exercise because it takes too long to stop and explain to people in cars who stop, honk, and offer a ride." "A little town is where city folks say there is nothing to do, but those who live there don't have enough nights in the week to anlek all the meetings and social functions.'' "A little town is where everyone becomes a 'neighbour' in time of need." "A little town is where businessmen struggle for survival against city stores and shopping centers." (St. Marys Journal Argus) Violence or filth Much has been heard in recent years of violence on television, and too many'American programs interfering with the develop- ment of Canadian culture. More recently much good family entertainment has been replaced by Canadian produced shows -- many of which would have difficulty in gaining tenth rating in any good amateur competition. We don't know where TV producers get their definition of "culture." There are several definitions of the word in most dictionaries. Some are: "The training and refining of the mind, emotions, manners, tastes, etc." or "The concepts, habits, skills, art, etc, of a given people in a given period" or "The growth of bacteria in a specially prepared substance." Take your pick --but if you can find anything in any of these definitions that even comes close to defining most of the prograrns.produc- ed by CBC or other Canadian TV producers it would have to be the third one. If such shows as last Sunday nights CBC production "Ten Lost Years" must be classed as Canadian culture, then hi our opinion it would be better for Canada and Canadians if Canadian cult- ure were allowed to remain dormant. While we have not had an opportunity to read the entire book "Ten Lost Years" published recently, we have look ed it over at some length, and can only conclude that if, in fact, the TV production was"in any way associated with the book, then the TV producer must have gone out of his way to find the most degrading and profane paragraphs, on which to base the TV production. As one who completed high school only a couple of years before the depression and whose hopes of any further education died when the depression began, we can only say that CBC's presentation of filth and profanity which was meant to portray life in the thirties, is an insult to the hundreds of thousands of then young Canadians who made it through the depression years on self-respect, and a willingness to work. And, please, Mr. Producer, remember too, it was these same hundreds of thous- • ands of young Canadians who were among the first to volunteer to defend their country and their way of life when World War II finally ended the "ten lost years."
