Huron plowmen pick officals
John Clark, R.R.5, Goderich
was re-elected president of the
Huron Plowman's Association
at the annual meeting at Win-
throp last Monday when there
was an attendance of 70.
Other officers elected are
vice-presidents, James Armst-
rong, Wingham and William J.
Leeming, R.R.4, Walton,
secretary -treasurer, Russell
Bolton, R.R.1, Seaforth, and
assistant secretary -treasurer,
Robert McCartney, R.R.4, Sea -
forth. Maurice Love is past
president, James Armstrong
is provincial director and Gord-
on McGavin is honorary direct-
or for O.P.A.
The election was carried out
by Hugh Hill, a long time
member of the Associatinn and
chairman of the local commit-
tee for the 1946 international
held in Huron. Mr. Hill rec-
ently celebrated his 90th birth-
day.
The meeting advanced plans
for Huron participation at the
annual meeting of the Ontario
Plowmen's Association in Tor-
onto in February.
In anticipation of the 1978
International being held in
Huron the local association will
be accompanied by the flag
party of the Seaforth District
High School Girls Trumpet
Band. Huron representatives
will travel by chartered bus.
Named as delegates represent-
ing Huron were President John
Clarke and Secretary Russel
Bolton.
Howard Datars' local com-
mittee said a review of possible
sites in Huron for 19'78 had been
reviewed by representatives
of the OPA and that a decision
could be expected in the near
future.
Members reviewed the 1974
match held on the William
Elston farm in Morris and were
agreed it had been most succ-
essful. The meeting approved
a resolution expressing apprec-
iation to Reeve Elston for his
co-operation in making facil-
ities available. The auditors
report was presented by Reeve
Simon Hallahan.
A feature of the meeting was
he display of a medal by Girvin
Reed won in 1880 by a member
of his family.
The inscription on the medal
was "Charles Girvin Jr., Waw-
anosh. Speed the Plow. First
prize for men and presented by
F.H. Garner, M.D. to be wnn
twice in Lucknow. "
Mr. Bolton recalled a brief
history of the Huron Association
which had been prepared by the
late Elston Cardiff, the first
secretary of the Association.
Until 1959 there had been
two associations in Huron --in
the north and south. In that
year the two amalgamated as
the Huron plowmen's Associat-
ion. Mr. Cardiff who had been ,
secretary of the North Huron
group since 1924 continued to
hold the dame office in the new
association. He was succeeded
by Mr. Bolton in 1967.
