order. If you want to be smuggl-
ed from Mexico to Los Angeles,
it can be done for $250. A one
way ticket to New York costs
a bit more but it can be had -
for $1, 000. It wouldn't take
too many trips before you could
retire, if you were in the bus-
iness of smuggling wetbacks. -
To be strictly accurate, these
illegal immigrants should be
called wetbacks only if they
come from Mexico but more
and more the term is being used
to describe anyone who sneaks
into the U.S. from this area. -
At any rate these people, and
they are said to number as many
as twelve million, are some-
thing of a sponge in that they
not only take employment
by their presence from legal
immigrants and Americans but
they also benefit from the
country's social services and
educational facilities without
paying any taxes.
The surprising thing about the
whole situation is that, while
everybody knows about it, even
Congress finds it hard to act.
A bill which passed the House
of Representatives last year
which would make it an offence
to knowingly employ an illegal
immigrant was killed in the
Senate Judiciary committee.
after some effective lobbying
by agricultural interests. They
claimed that the price of food
would inevitably rise if their
supply of cheap labor were
suddenly cut off.
However, with unemploy-
ment increasing in the United
States, such arguments are
getting less of a sympathetic
hearing than might be the
case. In addition, President
Ford has talked the natter over
with President Echeverria of
Mexico and the latter has agr-
eed to co-operate to cut down
on the number crossing the bor-
der. Even with the limited re-
sources the U.S. Immigration
Service now has, almost a
million were caughte last year
trying to slip across.
All this makes me wonder
just how many people there
are in Canada who are here ill-
egally.
