Zurich Village Council have
approved a one-year firefighting
agreement with flay and Stan-
ley townships.
The agreement covers the
village, the northwestern third
Of Hay and southern Stanley,
Costs will be shared according
to a formula based on relative
assessments.
Hay will contribute 48 per
cent of the cost, Zurich, 31
per cent and Stanley 21 per
cent.
The agreement cause after
weeks of discussions among
village and township councils.
It ended a stalemate produced
when Ilay objected to an earl-
ier formula which would have
had it pay iuore than half rhe
cost.
Hay's share was reduced,
according to township councill-
or Lionel Wilder, by taking a
portion fo the township out of
the fire area.
"We just didn't want to pay
more than half the cost of the
Zurich department, " lie said.

municipalities were technically

pact December 31,
Zurich and the townships
were close to signing a new
agreement in December, but
flay opposed the proposed share
of costs.
Ilay would have contributed
52.5 per cent of the fire area's
budget, Stanley 20.4 per cent
and Zurich 27.1 per cent.
The share of costs was based
on the total value of assess-
ment in the three communities.
Ilay's assessment was iiiuch
higher because of the string of
cottages in the township along
Lake Iluron.
Previously the three paid flat
rates plus hourly fees for the
time spent at fires within each
municipality.
In 1974, total firefighting
costs were about $4,600.
'Concern was expressed that
without an effective new agree-
ment rhe safety of flay's cott-
ages would be in jeopardy.
Councillor Wilder said flay
and Stanley will now discuss
purchase of a tanker truck to
serve the two townships but
which will be kept at the fire
station in Zurich.
