Stanley reeve elected warden
A 'cherished hope' of Stanley
Township Reeve Anson McKin-
ley was realized last Tuesday
afternoon in Goderich as the
members of Huron County
Council selected the vice-pres-
ident of McKinley Farms and
Hatchery, R. R.1, Zurich, as
their warden for 1975.
McKinley beat out two opp-
onents for the honor --Reeve
Harold Lobb, of Clinton and
Reeve Allan Campbell of
McKillop Township.
On the fitst ';afli►t, McKinley
had only a slight lead over
Lobb. The tally was McKinley
21; Lobb 19; and Campbell 16.
On the second ballot, 10 of
Campbell's votes went to
McKinley with the remaining
six going to Lobb. Two counc-
il members swung their support
from Lobb to McKinley on this
ballot as well, leaving the fin-
al result, McKinley 34; Lobb 22
It was a red letter day for
McKinley and his wife and fam-
ily as well as his father and
mother, Mr, and Mrs. Elgin
McKinley, It was 60 years ago
this month that Warden McKin-
ley's grandfather, John McKin-
ley was elected reeve of Stan-
ley Township and first went to
Huron County Council.
McKinley, nominated for
warden by Reeve Jack Tini y,
Hay Township, told council he
has no °great or grand plans
for county council' in the com-
ing months.
"This council doesn't deem
its strength from one warden
to one committee, " said Ward-
en McKinley. He called on
each individual member to
inspire confidence in the people
they serve.
"Our greatest resource is our
dedication and willingness to
accept responsibility, " he said.
Warden McKinley said that
in the past few years, govern-
ments have tended to rob ind-
ividuals of•the privilege to look
after themselves, supplying
everything from education to
hospitalization. He warned
that legislation is only a part
of what's needed for progress,
reminding his audience that
people must take part in the
work of the municipality.
The new warden said that in
the past young people have
been encouraged to get an
education because of the bene -

"What we should have emph-
asized is their increased pot-
ential to contribute to our soc-
iety," he pointed out.
He urged county leaders to
set an example,. saying that
they would be measured by their
contribution toward laying a
foundation for the future.
McKinley was mentioned as
a possible candidate for the Pro-
gressive Conservative Party
in the last provincial election.
,,3 assured council he had no
fitention at this time to step
up to a higher level of govern-
ment service and stated he
would be devoting a full year
and all his attention to the
business of being Warden of
Huron.

Mr. Cunningham said to use
two vehicles the total cost
per day was reported to be $80
and Mr. Cochrane said he
questioned the extra high cost
for this. E. Cayley Hill of God-
erich asked how much grant was
available and was told 93 per
cent if below ceiling, but
that the $80 figure was above.
Mr. Hill said it was a "fairly
hot issue in Goderich" but it
is something that should not
be confined to Goderich and the
Management Committee should '
look into other areas across the
county where st.:dents must wall
more than a mile to school.
He said the board would be oper
to criticism if "we do different-
ly than the separate school
board."

Warden McKinley was sworn
into office by Judge Francis
Carter. He received the chain
of office, the key to the coun-
ty and the warden's pin from
last year's warden, Bill Elston.
Clinton Reeve Harold Lobb,
had hoped to become warden
of Huron during the year of
Clinton's Centennial celebrat-
ions (July 25 to August 4).
However, he told the packed
chambers he would welcome
all to Clinton whether or not
he was named warden.
Allan Campbell said he hoped
this year to work towards an
addition to the now over -crowd-
ed Huronview Horne for the
Aged, and the establishment of
area recreation boards pattern-
ed after the present area
boards.
Mayor Deb Shewfelt, God-
erich, brought greetings from
the county town and said the
municipality's theme for 1975
is "communication and co-
operation --not only within our
own limits but the county lim-
its as well."
Mayor Shewfelt, who sat on
county council last year, said
the councillors face many
common sense challenges this
year.
"If there are any changes,
let's_make them our changes, '"
said Mayor Shewfelt.
There are 14 new members on
County council this year, 12
of whom are first time councill-
ors. Bill Dale and Grant Stirling
have returned after an absence
of some years each.
The Striking Committee was
named and included Ralph
McNichol, Jack Tinney, Ed
Oddleifson, Robbie Lawrie
and Norman Durst.
