Recreation budget looks good
The budget for the Recrea-
tion, Parks and Community
Centre board looks very good
this year so far. The deficit for
the entire year will only be
around $5,000, a far cry from
the $15,000 which had at first
been considered a possibility.
Isidore Laporte and Ray
McKinnon reported the finan-
cial situation of the board to
council at its meeting Wed-
nesday afternoon,
The arena is averaging
$1,000 a week so far in ice
rentals alone and the prospects
look very good for the remaind-
er of the winter weather.
However, revenue was lost
by the arena due to the con-
struction repairs which made
the use of the arena floor im-
possible for several weeks.
Despite this, the arena deficit
will be very little.
Mr. McKinnon informed
council the village is fortunate
to be able to keep the deficit;
under $10,000. He added the
village should try and keep
recreation costs below 15 mills
if possible.
At the annual conference of
the Lake Huron Zone of
O.M.R.A. attended by Mr.
McKinnon on Novemb'er 20
of this year, he said the deficit
by the Zurich arena is defin-
itely among the smallest he
heard of while there, Port
Elgin's deficit for recreation,
arena and pool is approx-
imately $122,000 with the
arena's share of that deficit
being $37,000. Many other
municipalities reported deficits
just as large. In comparison,
said Mr. McKinnon, the Zurich
deficit is very small and should
stay that way for at least
another year.
