Atoms at Garden City
The Zurich Atoms travelled to
Garden City December 4 and 5 ,
to take part in a two day tourna-
ment, and came home the win-
ners of both games they played.
December 4, the Zurich
Atoms came out flying in the
first period against Garden City
and scored the first goal in the
game in the first five minutes.
Jeff Laporte got the opening
goal assisted by Darcy Martin.
That was the only goal of the
first period.
In the second period Garden
City made a comeback scoring
at the two minute mark, How-
ever, the Zurich team rallied
and two minutes later Paul
Overholt scored to give Zurich
the edge once more. Paul was
assisted on his goal by Doug
Schade and Dean Armstrong.
In the third periods C. Neuf-
fer of Garden City bfoke away
following the opening faceoff
to score unassisted. The score
was now a 2-2 tie, but Zurich
wasn't finished yet.
Before the game ended
Zurich had scored twice more as
Jeff Laporte and Rick Kuepfer
both found- the target unassist-
ed, The final score was Zurich
4, Garden City 2.
Sunday's game was a high
scoring one With the Zurich
Atoms winning by a score of
8to6,
Four goals were scored in
the first period of play, two
by each team. Zurich scored the
first goal as Doug Schade hit
the net at the 50 second mark,
assisted by Dean Armstrong.
Garden City then put on a spurt
and tied the score at one goal
each. Zurich was not to be kept
to a tie and within two minutes
they had again taken the lead
on an unassisted goal by Rick
Kuepfer. Garden City rallied
and before the first period had
ended they had again tied the
game with an unassisted goal
by C. Howe.
Garden City took the lead
early in the second period with
a goal at the 20 second mark.
Fortunately this did not bother
the Zurich team too much, as
they answered that goal with
tree of their own. First Rick
Kuepfer scored to bring the
game back to a tie assisted by
Gerry Smith and Brian Steckle.
Following this Dean Armstrong
showed excellent style as he
managed to score two con-
secutive unassisted goals to
give Zurich the undisputed lead
in the game. Garden City man-
aged to score once more before
the second period ended to
make the score Zurich 5, Gard-
en City 4 at the end of the
second period.
The third period was a goal
filled one with five goals in all
being scored. Zurich began the
scoring spree with a goal by
Rick Kuepfer assisted by Jeff
Laporte at the one minute
mark of the third period. Gar-
den City's number 10, C.
Robinson came back with an
unassisted goal to make the
score closer once more. It was
then that Dean Armstrong went
on another scoring spree scor-
ing two more unassisted goals
giving Dean a record of four
goals and one assist for the
game. Garden City managed to
score once more before the
end of the game, however
Zurich's lead was just too
much for them. The final score
was Zurich 8, Garden City 6.
CHRISTMAS COMBINED WITH SPORTS—Left to right, Robert Willert, Edward Neeb, Jim
Willert and Bob Hay undertook decorating this bulletin board in a manner which combines sports
with Christmas. It took the boys about three hours to give the board its cheerful look.
