Christmas lights on houses, trees and windows increase hydro con- sumption a good deal. In the past we have not had to worry about this to much, but things are changing. Char- lie Eckel, manager of the PUC in Zurich, says they have received many brochures from Ontario Hydro asking them to encourage consumers to save hydro, especially between the hours of 4 p.m, to 7 p.m. Use of hydro during these hours has reached a critical point, it must be reduced. The hydro office encourages people to wait until after seven to do their dishes, laundry or to have that long hot bath. At other times of the day, turn out lights if they are not in use and try and make the most efficient use of hydro as poss- ible. As far as Christmas decora- tions go, Ontario Hydro is asking consumers to turn them on after 7 p.m. and turn them off again at bedtime. Flood lights outside a home especial- ly use a great deal of hydro and their use should be as limited as possible says Mr. Eckel. Unfortunately, the vill- age street Christmas lights will not be running under these regulations. There is no separ- ate electrical circuit for the Christmas lights in the village of Zurich, so they must be hooked up with the - street lights. This means the Christ- mas decorations on the main streets will turn on at dusk and off at dawn. However, Mr. Eckel did say the village has decided to cut the number of decorations used in half, from sixteen decorated poles to only eight. Also, the village is once again using tree branches and a string of colored lights to decorate tree poles rather than spend money on more expensive decorations. The branches cost nothing but the time it takes to get them and the lights are reused year after year. The length of time the decorations will be left up has also been cut by about two weeks.
