Many torrner members and
special guests attended the
Christmas meeting in Varna
U.C.W. A delicious pot -luck
supper preceded the pro-
gramme in the gaily decorated
Sunday School room.
Mrs. Reta Upshall was pre-
sented with a lovely arrange-
ment of dried flowers and Mrs.
Ida Godkin with the book
"Lines to Live By". These
valued members have recently
moved to Bayfield and Clinton
respectively.
Margaret Hayter opened the
worship service with a poem
"The Star of Bethlehem".
Mildred McAsh showed two
filmstrips, "How We Got Our
Christmas Carols" with the
members joining in singing
the carols, and "A great and
Mighty Wonder" which was
the Christmas Story beginning
with the Old Testament pro-
phecies. Elva Webster gave a
reading, "Treasurer Boxes".
Marjorie Stirling presided
for business. Reports were
given by the secretary, Mona
Stephenson and the treasurer,
Margaret Hayter. Helen Taylor
presented the report of the
nominating committee, with all
offices filled for the new year
except that of vice-president.
A donation will be sent to the
Children's Aid Society, and
Christmas boxes for shut-ins
will be packed on December 15
at the home of Margaret Hunt.
Donations of cookies, etc. from
members would be helpful.
The Sunday School's Christmas
concert will be held on Mon-
day, December` 20.
Margaret Hayter closed the
meeting with a poem.
A lovely pulpit fall and a
communion table runner com-
memorating the 50th anniver-
sary of church union were dedi-
cated during the church service
on Sunday.
The annual White Gift ser-
vice will be held next Sunday,
with the Sunday School in
charge of the service. Loose
collection and money gifts will
be given to the local Retarded
Children's Association.
Mrs. Minnie Hayter's home
in Varna has been sold to
Miss Joyce Scott of Bayfield,
who is to get possession on
December 20. A sale of house-
hold articles is being held this
coming Saturday in the town-
ship shed.
Mrs. Florence Elliott accom-
panied by her son Ross and
his fiancee, spent the weekend
in Toronto with Mr. and Mrs.
Bruce Elliott and Erin. On
Saturday evening, they had
dinner in the beautiful Ben
Hur dining lounge near Hamil-
ton.
Buying a bicycle
A bicycle is always a gift of
joy for any child, and an excel-
lent means of exercise for older
members of the family, too.
But it is also important to
select the size of bike that the
rider can handle easily and
safely and not one that the
rider will "grow into".
A reliable guide for size
for a child between 5 and 7
years, usually a bike with a
20 -inch wheel will do; for
8 - 10 years, a 24 -inch wheel;
for 11 and older, a 26 -inch
wheel.
When the rider is seated, the
leg, thigh and the heel of the
foot on the "down" pedal
should form a straight line.
For ensured stability, the
seat should be parallel to the
ground, the handlebars should
be set at seat height, and
the grips should be at right
angles to the handlebar system.
