It was a four goal outburst in the last half of the second period which actually made the difference. The Exeter club led 1-0 at the . end of the first period and 2-1 un- til the 15.37 mark of the middle frame when they started to pull away. The only goal of the first 20 minutes of play came at 17,10 when Fred Mommersteeg blink- ed the light behind the Lucan net on a three-way combination with Ken Pinder and John Van Gerwen. At 14.24 of the second session the Hawks took a 2-0 lead when Brian Taylor scored on an un- assisted effort. Only 20, seconds later the Irish hit the scoreboard for the first time as Ken Murray clicked with assists going to Brad Taylor and Don Latta. The Hawks quickly opened up the lead again with three successful shots in the remaining moments in the second period. Paul Pooley was first to check onto thescoreboard.He converted passes from Steve Jennison and Fred Mommersteeg at 15.31. Less than two minutes later Ken Pinder tallied on a play originated by Tom Hayter and Fred Mommersteeg. The final goal of the middle frame came from the stick of Brian Taylor as he fired in a pass from Gerald Weido. The final Exeter goal late in the third period whs an identical play with Taylor scoring from, Weido. Ken Murray notched the se- cond Lucan marker early in the third period on a pass from Brad Taylor and John Jongeneel scored from Dave Smith to complete the Irish scoring.
