Cross Country runners report on course
Notes from Cross Country
reports written by the runners.
I enjoyed participating in this
sport. I think it gets you in
shape both physically and ment-
ally. I enjoyed the two miles
race although I didn't particu-
larly care for the huge hill to
climb or the sinking sand. I
am going to keep on compet-
ing and doing my best in the
future.
Faye Carnochan, Gr. 6
Hiked cross country this year
but I feel sorry for some of
the kids in other schools who
got sick because they didn't
train right. I'm going to run
again next year because I really
like it.
Becky Collins, Gr. 6
I had fun practising for cross
country but got poison ivy when
I when up• the hill and had to
go to the doctor's.
Nancy Taylor, Gr. 4
The things I liked about the
cross country were running
through the bush and coming to
the finish line. I didn't like
starting because it made me
nervous when there were so
many kids. Hiked coming home
and getting the popsicle.
Stephen Coombs, Gr. 4
I think the training was fun
because it was increased grad-
ually. Other than the great big
hill and the sand, the course
was alright and we had fun that
day.
David Binnendyk, Gr. 7
I went to cross country for
the fun of taking part and doing
my best.
Shelly Horner, Gr. 8
Cross country was well worth
the time. Running gradually
from a short distance to a longer
one. Out of all the years I have
participated in cross country
this would have to be one of my
best. Our school didn't come
first but second was just as
good. It's great to see Seaforth
finally doing some practising
but it's too bad Clinton doesn't.
Tony Gibbins, Gr. 8
I think that both gym teachers
did a very good job training
us. Even though I didn't run in
the actual race I had a good time
at practices. I got my run when
we went looking for the bus
driver.
Joan Binnendyk, Gr. 3
I liked our cross country run
a lot except for the hill. It was
too hard and took too much
energy at the start and I
couldn't run the rest of the race
very well. Whoever thought of
the hill should have tried
running it.
Pauline Wallace, Gr. 7
I have had a great experience
with cross country. It was fun
running, being with other kids
and geting popsicles. You can
see that I liked cross country.
Wade Clark, Gr. 7
I think our cross country
practices were good for our
legs and were fun. The meet
was fun but the hill too big.
Rickie Johnston, Gr. 7
The route was good because I
like running in a bush because
you can't see how far you have
to go. The beginning was real-
ly hard running in the sand and
then the hill was a real chal-
lenge but it was too hard on
you at the,start.
Richard Johns, Gr. 8
We started practising the
first • day back to school after
summer holidays and kept at
it until the race in October..I
sure didn't like the hill but I
had a really good time. I will
probably try out next year and
hope to do just as well or better.
Sherry Chuter, Gr. 5
I sure was cold before we
started and I was scared of
spraining my ankle again. Boy
does it hurt! I didn't do so hot
but maybe next year.
Food safety • uiz
for festive season
The Christmas season ap-
proaches. You are busy plan-
ning meals. You want to make
sure everything is done well
ahead to leave you plenty of
time to organize yourself and
the household. However, this
could get you into trouble. Try
this quiz prepared by food
specialists at the Ontario Food
Council, Ministry of Agriculture
and Food. A "yes" answer to
any one of the following quest-
ions could lead to cases of
*intestinal upset for food poison-
ing..
Do you keep a thawed turkey
for more than a day before
cooking even in the refriger-
ator?
• Do you stuff a turkey more
than three hours in advance of
roasting?
Do you stuff a turkey then
freeze it so that it will be
"ready" for roasting?
Do you partically cook the
turkey one day then finish
the cooking the next day so
that you won't have to get up
so early?
Do you store the cooked
leftover turkey, with the stuff-
ing in it, in the refrigerator?

Nancy MacGregor, Gr. 8
Even though this year I
didn't run the race I was still
excited. My job, at the race,
was marking down the finish
order of the runners from our
school. Another job for the
people, from our school, that
were not running was to keep
the runners on the right trail
for the trail was tricky. I feel
the two hardest spots were the
high hill and the sand. Some
kids from other schools didn't
condition themselves very well
but most of us spent hours prac-
tising. The race was good and
I was proud of the runners from
Huron Centennial.
Our school got three team
championships and came in
second over all. I liked the grass
but not the hill. I would like
to be in cross country next year.
Lori Hayter, Gr. 5
I liked the training because
Mr. Walker made it a bit longer
each day and then we weren't
as tired as the ones who didn't
train.
Dianne Gridzak, Gr. 7
I didn't like the course we
had to run this year ' mainly
because of the and and that
cliff. I enjoy running and sports
and I know our school team did
its best.
Carol McIntosh, Gr. 8
I like the idea of training us
to run longer than the meet
really, was. Track was easy
compared to the school run
except for the hill. The idea of
waling around the course first
and getting advice from Mr.
Laurie and Mr. Walker was
good. Overall it was worth the
bit of homework we got so we
could catch up on our day's
work.
Rodger McKinley, Gr. 7
I liked cross country because
we got to run with other kids
and compete against other
-ghools. Seaforth finally did
well this year, : barely coming
ahead of us. I think everybody
enjoyed it because I sure did.
Brian Coombs, Dr. 6
Our training was good and I
new
helping
hands
from JOHN DEERE
for 1977
think we did quite well.
Sylvia Wood, Gr. 7
I enjoyed cross country this
year and found it easier. The
running is good and I plan to
go in cross country in grade
nine.
Nancy Parsons, Gr. 8
Our teachers Mr. Laurie and
Mr. Walker really helped us
get prepared for the meet:
They had us run everyday at
school. Our school came in
second out of all the schools
competing and I really enjoyed
the day.
Beth Consitt, Gr. 6
Cross country is fun because
you get to meet other people.
I liked practice too when Mr.
Walker took video-tape pictures
of us and then showed them on
the T.V. I also liked the pop-
sicles but didn't like the place
the meet was held with sand,
cliffs and mud puddles. I do
think it was alright going to
cross country and having a fun
run.
Leonard Teaters, Gr. 6
