Jack itidtl'eII The provincial Government has resubmitted legislation on Farm Income Stabilization. The Liberal Party have decided to support the Bill on second reading as we believe in the principle of • the Bill, Last June we asked that the original Bill be referred back to the Government to have in- corporated therein principles of a farm income protection plan which _would be open to the producers of all farm products on a voluntary and contributory basis, with the government negotiating with legally con- stituted farm spokesmen and with assurance that the govern- ment provide a public forum for full discussion with the farm community before re- introduction of the Bill. As far as we are concerned, the government has met these demands. The government has consulted with the farm people. The government has set up a plan on a voluntary, contributory basis. There is provision in the Bill where the Commission that has been established, can consult with the producer organizations and the producers themselves in order to arrive at a stabilized price. It would be highly irresponsible on anyone's part to oppose a Bill where the demands have actually been met. We are not saying there are not some misgivings about the Bill, but we support in principle what the government has done. We are prepared to bring in amendments when the Bill goes into Committee in the full House. I am sure that the amendments that we will bring in, are amendments that the Minister is already familiar with because he has received word from some of the farm organizations as to what they think should be incorporated in this Bill and as you well know, the various farm organizations are prepared to support this Bill if some of the amendments are made, that we feel should be made. 1 would like to elaborate on some of the amendments. In connection with the con- stitution of the Commission, we do not feel that it should, just be appointed by the Lieutenant DdfiFlip `la.S}p GG14OAG14Lz cizh 16Ya nG.P DCa too :71:9 S10041s10. Another amendment we would like to see is in connection with the indexing. When establishing a stabilized price, the Bill refers to cash cost. We feel that actual cost of production should be taken into .. onsideration, because there are so many more costs involved, rather than cash cost, that a farmer must take into con- sideration. He has a high investment so surely he must be allowed some interest on his investment and of course, he should be allowed something for labour, because today most farmers have to hire (continued on page 19) FRESH PORK Butt Chops MAPLE LEAF SLICED Cooked Hares SCHNEIDER'S Roasted Pig Tails SCHNEIDER'S VAC HALVES Cottage Roll Al Steer - Fronts Sides 724 ,89c Al Heifer - 71c 874 LB. 89c 9.99 LB. 3 LB.
