The anchor was in 30 feet of water and Mr. McGraw and his crew were able to haul the old anchor aboard. Covered in barnacles and rust, the anchor was judged to be close to 100 years old and obviously taken quite a strain. The main shaft of the anchor was slightly bowed and there was not much of its chain left. Mr. McGraw has donated the anchor to the Bayfield Historical Society. Melvina Erickson, a member of that society, says they are quite excited over the find. The socie- ty intends to have the anchor cleaned, probably by sand- blasting, and then perhaps place it in a cement founda- tion overlooking Lake Huron on Signal point by Pioneer Park. There are some letters and numbers visible on the anchor and it is hoped further clean- ing will reveal the rest. If so, the Historical society should be able to trace the anchor through these identification numbers and find out what ship it be- longed to and perhaps when the anchor was lost. One possible theory Mrs. Erickson came up with, was a schooner had perhaps anchored offshore and the lake became too rough for the anchor to hold, snapping the chain and setting the schooner adrift.
