Zurich reeve calls it quits
Zurich Reeve Fred Haberer
says he "will not be available
for nomination for another term
of office this year." Mr. Haber-
er made the statement at the
regular meeting of council last
Wednesday afternoon.
Ray McKinnon and Isidore
Laporte, both said that at this
point in time they had no
intentions of running, however,
things could change. Leroy
Thiel says he's not going to
say whether he'll be around or
not be around, while the final
member of council, George
Haggitt says he is definitely
not running for another term.
All the councillors have time
to think their decisions over a
little longer as the nomination
days are from Novembe 11 to
November 15 inclusive.
Mr. Haberer congratulated
his council on the job they
have done saying "1 feel
council should be pleased with
themselves over the amount of
work that has been accomplish-
ed."
As far as the elections go,
Mr. Haberer summed that up
as well.
`It's election year and that's
the name of the game. Actually
all council seats are open."
Other members of council
expressed the hope there would
be at least six people running

for the five council positions
to make the election more
exciting and build up more
interest in the council by
everyone in the village.
There will not be a rate-
payers meeting held. Council
felt it would serve little purpose
as all the council meetings are
open to the public and rate-
payers meetings in the past
have not been very well attend-
ed.
No interest in South
Huron Rec League.
Zurich council is not interest-
ed in joining a south Huron
Recreation League as proposed
to them in a letter from the town
of Exeter.
The letter was read at the
council meeting; last Wednes-
day and said the' heads of coun-
cil of Hay, Stephen, Usborne
and Exeter had met to study
the possibilities of forming such
an association made up of two
delegates from each munici-
pality. Letters were sent to
Grand Bend and Hensall coun-
cils as well as Zurich.
The letter proposed two dele-
gates from each municipality
would form a league to deter-
mine the part to be played in
recreation by the involved
municipalities and would report
directly to the councils.
Council expressed the opin-
ion they would rather form a
area with Grand Bend and Hay
perhaps, at least then there
would only be one facility in
the group.
Councillor Ray McKinnon
said, "This proposal has a large
municipality plus two other
municipalities with facilities
and this is not a good arrange-
ment. Exeter is proposing a
total of seven municipalities
join together and that is too
many I feel. "
Councillor Leroy Thiel pro-
posed the letter be sent to the
recreation committee for their
study and any proposals they
would recommend be returned

Preliminary fearing set
in Dashwood mur er case
A preliminary hearing has
been set for November 22 into the
charge of non -capital murder laid
against 64 -year-old Floyd Wein,
Dashwood.
Wein was charged last Wed-
nesday by police who were in-
vestigating the death of his wife,
Florence.
Her body was discovered in the
couple's home on the western
outskirts of Dashwood Tuesday
morning. Police were notified by
personnel from Hoffman's
Ambulance.
An autospy revealed that the
woman had died from a fractured
skull. The autopsy was per-
formed in Stratford hospital.
Wein, who was found at the
scene of the crime by police, was
formally charged Wednesday
and appeared in. Goderich court
on Thursday. He was remanded
until Monday, when the date for
the preliminary hearing was set.
Wein has been ordered held in
custody in Stratford jail, but is
expected to be released on bail
prior to the hearing.
OPP Inspector William
O'Rourke is in charge of the
investigation, Exeter Constable
Jim Rogers is assisting. Most
members of the local detachment
were involved in the investigation
following the discovery of the
woman's body.
Wein was represented at
Monday's court session by
Goderich lawyer James Don-
nelly.
The murder was the fifth in the
Exeter OPP detachment area in
the past 10 years. All the victims
were women.Charges were laid
in three of the previous murder
counts and in all cases Mr.
Donnelly successfully defended.
No charges were ever laid in the
death of a Sarnia area girl whose
body was found north of Grand
Bend two years ago.
to council at its next meeting.
This was approved by Mr.
McKinnon, who is also on the
recreation committee, said he
felt the committee would not go
for the proposal as outlined by
Exeter. Rather an alternate
proposal would likely be re-
turned to council.
Hay reeve
decides
to run
Jack Tinney, reeve of Hay
township says he is definitely
planning to run for the posi-
tion of reeve in the coming
municipal election.
However, the remainder of
the council members are not
quite so definite.
Mr. Tinney asked the other
members of his council to
decide for certain whether they
intend to run for council before
the next regular meeting of
council on November 1 and
make a definite statement at
that time.
This was confirmed by deputy
reeve Joe Miller who says he
hasn't decided yet but will
have before the next council
meeting along with everyone
else on council.
Other members of the Hay
council are Lionel Wilder,
Lloyd Mousseau and Tony
Bedard.
