A former world speed skating
champion may be the new coach
of the Zurich Intermediate
team in the South Huron Hock-
ey League. Orel Duffy, pre-
sently retired in Bayfield, has
been asked to coach the over -
17 year olds and has attended
at least one of their practices to
see how the team looks.
Mr. Duffy won nine speed -
skating championships before
he was 17 years old, has set
four world records in speed
skating—some of which still
stand, has 144 medals, nine
titles and many, many trophies.
In 1936, disappointed be-
cause he couldn't get financing
to attend the Olympics that
year, the 17 year old Mr.
Duffy turned to hockey. He had
never played hockey before and
hast never worn the shorter
blade hockey skates. He spent
the summer on roller skates on
a dead end street trying to
control a rubber ball, and his
pato icing paid Toff.
Mr. Duffy made the OHA Jr.
A Toronto Lions that fall and
spent a year with the team.
He then moved to Saskatche-
wan to play for the Yorkton
Terriers and after oto yr ..r'
there went to the Chicago Black
Hawks.
His career with the Black
Hawks was spectacular but
brief. He was hook -checked
from behind and the stick
caught his right eye. He was
sightless in that eye for six
months and it took five years to
heal.
At 59, Mr. Duffy still views
sports as an integral part of
any persons life.
The Zurich Intermediate
home ice will of course be in
Zurich as soon as the ice is in,
•
however, until then they are
,practicing in the arena at
\'anastra, the next practice
being this Thursday at 11 p.m.
So far about 15 boys- have
turned out to practice but any-
one who is interested is wel-
come to show up. There are
some new teams in the South
Huron Hockey league this year
so the competition could he
tough. •
The (iode.rich Assessment
Office, Hensall and Watford are
all sponsoring teams in the
!ague this year to bring the
league total to eight teams with
the possibility of a few more.
Even so, if Mr. Duffy does
decide to coach the Zurich
team, they stand a good chance
of placing high in the league.
