Monday night was the beginning night of bean cooking for the festival Saturday. Photo by McKinley Bean cart custom made There will be a new innovation this year at the Bean Festival to increase efficiency and safety in the serving of the homemade beans, salads and ham. The bean festival committee has designed a cart to cut down on the labor needed to carry hot roasting pans of beans from the festival kitchen to the various meal outlets around town. In the past, these hot roast- ing pans were mostly carried by local teenagers. The pans were both heavy and hot and trying to ?dodge the many people in town while making sure the roasting pan did not come in contact with anyone's body was a difficult task. Accidents were bound to happen. In an effort to cut down on some of the running around, the bean festival committee decided to design a cart which would hold not only the hot roasting pans of beans, but bowls of salad and platters of ham as well. This would not only elimin- ate the necessity of so many young strong volunteers, it would be faster and safer than the other way. The resulting plan for the cart was given to Bendix of Hensall who very kindly consented to make the special cart their donation to the bean festival. It is apptovximately 40" by 36" on four rubber wheels with two shelves, each having a 10 inch lip to prevent the pans from falling off. So this year visitors will only have to dodge the cart, not people carrying hot roasting pans.
