Clinton wins tournament
Zurich's first attempt at hold-
ing a fastball tournament was a
complete success. Eight teams
entered the tournament held all
day Saturday and blue skies and
warm weather helped keep the
spectator attendance high.
The games began at 8 a.m.
with Zurich defeating Exeter 5
to 2. Clinton then took over the
field to squeak past Lucan
with a 3 to 2 victory. Goderich
followed with a 6 to 4 win over
the Brussels team and Walton
defeated Elmira 5 to 0.
This managed to send Exeter,
Lucan Brussels and Elmira into
the consolation semi-finals in the
afternoon. Here Lucan defeated
Exeter 6 to 5 and Brussels lost to
Elmira, 5 runs to 4.
In the Championship semi-
finals Clinton defeated the home
Zurich team 5 runs to 3 to move
into the finals and Walton trounc-
ed Goderich 9 to 0.
The winners of the Consolation
trophy turned out to be Lucan
with a 2 to 1 win over Elmira.
The Clinton Bluebirds defeated
Walton 1 to 0 to take the Champ-
ionship and the tournament was
over.
Those attending and partici-
pating in the tournament were
not only there to watch baseball
it seems as the conscessions at
the tournament went through
600 hot dogs, 105 pounds of
sausage and 25 pounds (approxi-
mately 288 popped bags) of hot
buttered popcorn. There was also
a beer parlor in the arena to
quench any sudden thirsts.
Dashwood Tigers lose
championship to Clinton
The hopes of the Dashwood
Tigers to win the Huron -Perth
intermediate baseball league
championship this year were
quickly dashed by the Clinton
Colts.
The Clinton club scored three
straight wins over the Dashwood
club to capture the seasonal title.
After taking the first game by a
score of 7-0 a week ago, the Colts
scored identical 9-6 wins Wed-
nesday and Friday night. Both
games were played in Dashwood.
In Wednesday's contest, the
Colts scored four times in the
second inning and three more in
the fourth to ensure their victory
over the Tigers.
Dashwood's first score came in
the second frame when Jim
Guenther blasted a home run
over the right field fence. In the
Tiger third Dave Parsons
walked, stole second base, moved
to third on a sacrifice and home
on a groundout by shortstop John
Hayter.
Facing a seven run deficit
heading into their last turn at bat
in the ninth, the Tigers rallied to ®'0''w' '' wArAi ®' ®'S® ®®® ®°°®®®®®'` '' Ar iQ
score four times but were unable
to get any closer.
for the first time in the second
inning when Glenn Thurman
walked, moved to second on Jim
Guenther's single and around to
score on a double from the bat of
John Hayter.
In the Dashwood third, Jim
Dietrich and Dave Parsons
singled and both scored on Jim
Guenther's blast over the right
field fence.
The final two Tiger scored were
produced in the fifth as Jim
Guenther singled, John Hayter
was hit by a pitch and scored on a
single from Brad Gregus and Rob
Dickey's grounder.
Other Tiger hits were a double
by Glenn Thurman and singles
from Bob Hoffman and Brad
Gregus.
