Zurich Citizens News, 1976-08-25, Page 12Page 12 -Zurich Citizens News, August 25, 197b Jack Riddell As you know, each year quite a number of young people in Ontar- io have the opportunity of partici- pating in the activities of the Ontario Legislature, in the capa- city of Pages. Groups of 20 pages serve for a period of approximate- ly six or seven weeks, and I be- lieve that, for the most part, they find this an interesting and education experience. Since the 1st of March, 1971, girls as well as boys have been eligible to become Pages, and applicants must have either Grade 7 or 8, with an average of 80%. Students wishing to make application must write a personal letter to the Speaker of the House, the Honourable Russell D. Rowe, Room 193, Parliament Buildings, Queen's Park, Toron- to. The letter should give details of education and background, as well as the reason for the applicant's interest in serving in the Legislature. When the Speak- er writes to the, student, giving the general requirements for the position of Page. the applicant then makes a formal application. For students who do not live • in Toronto, it is necessary to make arrangements for accommo- dation in the City, and this is the responsibility of the Page's parents. In this connection, I would like to stress that Pages are not allowed to leave the Parlia- ment Buildings until they go home each day. Pages receive an honorarium of $7.50 a day at present, and if it is necessary to stay for a late sitting of the Legislature, each Student Pages mut Page receives an additional half day's pay. Incidentally, the even- ing duties ,are arranged in such a way that no Page works late more than one evening a week. As the payments are made on the basis of a computerized record,' each student must have a Social In- surance Number, The Legislative Assembly supplies the uniforms for the Pages, and applicants are usually asked to come to Toronto for fittings approximately two or three weeks ahead of their tour of duty. Pages must buy their own meals while working at the Legislature, and this is no great problem as there are a number of excellent cafeterias in the Parlia- ment Buildings. A qualified tutor is available at the Legislature, and Pages are given some five hours of tutor- ing each week. A Page. Master and Page Mistress are in charge of the young people, and every effort is made to provide recrea- tion in the fresh air on a regular basis. There is also a Games Room available in the quarters allocated to the Pages. It is always a great pleasure to welcome visitors from the Riding when they visit Queen's Park. Many thousands of people come to the Legislature each year, sometimes visiting as individuals, but often in groups such as school classes, Girl Guides and Boy Scouts, Senior Citizens and so on. In the period between January and June this year, some 980 groups participated in the organized tours—totalling appro- ximately 33,500 people. During the recess, the tour lasts approxi- mately half an hour, but when the House is in session, a half- hour visit to the Legislature is included for a total of one hour. This gives people an opportunity to witness the debates which take place, and one of the most interesting periods for visitors is the Question Period. The guides who conduct the tours, as well as giving the historical and legislative history of the Ontario Legislature, also take visitors to the Heritage Rooms, providing interesting We extend a sincere WELCOME to Zurich's Eleventh annual BEAN FESTIVAL Please feel free to drop in and meet us DELICIOUS FULL COURSE MEALS SERVED IN OUR DINING ROOM 5 P.M. - 7:30 P.M. Groups are usu- ally photographed on the main stairway of the Legislative Build- ing, and these photographs are a pleasant momento of an interesting day. Visitors are also given a "tourist package" which at the present time con- sists of three booklets—one by Ontario Hydro on the Gifts of Nature, another called "Grand- eur, Ghosts and Gargoyles", an entertaining history of Queen's Park, and a third called "People, Ideas and Laws". The package also contains a card on the Province's coat of arms, and a medallion, with the trillium on one side, the coat of arms on the other. If you wish to arrange a group visit to the Legislature, I would suggest that you try to make your arrangements approximately two months in advance of the pro- posed visit, to avoid disappoint- ment. I shall be happy to take care of these arrangements for you, if you wish. May I also take this opportun- ity to remind you that arrange- ments can be made for people ave 80 celebrating 50th (and upwards) Wedding Anniversaries, and 90th (or more) Birthdays to receive commemorative Scrolls, or plaq- ues, from the Province of Ontario. Please let me know details of any such events in the Riding. Scrolls are also available for other special occasions, such as a Town's 50th or 100th Anniver- sary, special acts of heroism, or long-standing community service.
