only be a continuation of a
"cheap food policy".
The Huron County Federation
of Agriculture, speaking on
behalf of 2100 Individual Service
Members, favours the principle
as set forth in the policy of the
Ontario Federation of
Agriculture that: "Services to
people should be paid by people
and services to property should
be paid by the owners of the
property".
"People taxes" such as
education taxes should be
completely removed from
property and should be assessed
on ability to pay, thus on income.
If this were done, the farm tax
rebate, which forces the farmer
to beg for money from the
government every year, could be
abolished.
If land use should change away
from farming, the last ten years
could be reassessed as
speculative land and the ad-
ditional taxes, if any, should be
levied at an interest rate as
charged by the banks.
Institutions that have incomes
should be taxed on their income
and not on their property. If for
instance, a church has an income.
from investments, this income
should be taxed. If, on the other
hand a small church as just
enough income to maintain the
church buildings and pay the
minister, rabbi or priest, they
should not be taxed.
In the brief we have set why we
oppose the proposals. We have
however not been all negative
and have suggested some
positive alternatives. We corn-
-mend the Minister for
recognizing that the present tax
laws are not equitable, but we are
of the opinion that the proposals

is {oining the teaching staff of the Huron Board of Education this fall

The Huron County Pork Pro-
ducers Association will hold their
Annual Pork Bar -B -Q and. Pork
Hostess Contest in the Seaforth
arena on Thursday, August 26.
This event always draws large
crowds, and this year is expected
to be no exception. Last year
hundreds had to be turned back.
It is advisable to purchase
your tickets early as only 1300
tickets will be available from the
directors.
The Pork Hostess is expanded
this year to include married
girls. The contestants must be
