Sandy Wilson's THE BOYFRIEND was a hit when it opened in London, and later won similar enthusiastic reaction on Broadway in 1954. ; It is a witty, stylish cartoon of the 20's. The Boyfriend takes place on the French Riviera, where Polly, a millionaire's daughter, is attending Mme. Dubonnet's fashionable finishing school. She meets and falls in love with Tony, a delivery boy, who later turns out to be the wealthy son of Lord Brockhurst. To hold his interest, Polly pre- tends that she's a working girl, and endless confusion follows. Meanwhile, Polly's father stops at the school for a brief visit and rediscovers his wartime sweetheart, Mme, Dubonnet. After all the misunderstanding are sorted out, the couples are reunited for the inevitable happy Tomatoe end rot At this time of year we see many examples of blossom end rot on tomatoes. It is not a disease but a disorder usually caused by a calcium deficiency, a lack of water at some point during the growing season, or a combination of the two. Blossom end rot shows us as a dark area with a rotted appea- rance on the end of the tomato away from the stem, says Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food horticulturist J. K. Hughes. The tomatoes lose their firmness and shape. When the plant is experiencing water stress, the nutrient calcium is not able to move freely to the extreme parts of the fruit and a deficiency occurs, this causes the cells to break down and rot sets in. To prevent blossom end rot, water the plants once a week when there is no rain. Make sure they are well mulched and try to keep the calcium levels up in the soil. The application of a foliar spray may help correct a calcium deficiency, although this has not yet been proven to be a conclusive remedy. Once blossom end rot has set in, there is nothing you can do about it. Mr. Hughes recom- mends you discard the rotten tomatoes, either in the compost heap or the garbage. ending. The Boyfriend is a good- humoured, tuneful and affection- ate tribute to the innocence and high spirits of the Charleston, Cloche hat and short skirt days. Hit songs from this show include "I could be happy with you "Won't you Charleston with me" and "It's never too late to fall in Love" ' Starring in this week's Play- house production is Jeanne Beauvais, in the role of Mme Debonnet. Miss Beauvais, who recreated this role in the latest Broadway revival of The Boyfriend, also played Mme. Dubonnet at New York's Cherry Lame Theatre for a two-year run, and has performed in several other BOYFRIEND productions in Illinois and Puerto Rico. She is, perhaps, best known to Playhouse audiences for her portrayal of Dolly Levi, in last year's smash hit Hello Dolly. Irma La Douce cast members returning to perform in The Boy- friend, include David Dunbar, Robert Landar, Catherine Leckie, Peter Purvis and James Saar. Other roles will be taken by Teresa Castonguay and Marylu Moyer. Playhouse Artistic Direc- tor James Murphy directs this production, with Musical Direc- tion by Barbara Yound and choreography by Bonnie Sandi- son. The Boyfriend runs Wednesday to Saturday evenings (July 28 - Aug. 1) at 8:30 with a preview performance at 2:00 Wednesday, and a discount matinee Saturday at 4:00.
