Hit and run

scraped paint jobs 111111 occur
every year. The results are most
often frustration on the part of
the owners of the damaged
vehicles, and the police. and of
course payment of costs by the
owner or insurers.
A program instigated in the
Niagara region of Ontario by
the Niagara Regional Police that
could solve elan} of these prob-
lems, but more importantly
still, it could solve many of the
I11oi'e serious tpprs that involve
personal injury following a hit
and run accident.'
Niagara Regional Policemen
carry small .stickers, which are
completed and affixed to the
inside of a window after a report-
ed accident. The sticker says, in
effect, that the police are aware
of this damage and how it was
caused. Since danlagc of over
$200 (an almost miniscule amount
in these inflated days) is report-
able, under Ontario lav, this
should be most vehicles involved
in any form of collision.
if tt vehicle not carrying the
sticker is taken to a bodyshop
for extensive damage repairs. it
becomes suspect as a hit and run
vehicle.
Also, police keep -in touch with
repair shops. and notify them if
a search is on for any particu-
lar vehicle involved in a more
serious accident, such as might
involve personal injury.
After a serious accident, let
us say running .over a child, an
owner could still garage the vehi-
cle privately for an extended
period. or chance (Ill \ Ind a goody
