More would take an interest if they were reminded frequently that teeth are necessary for good health, an asset to good appearance, need- ed for chewing and assist in speech. There are 20 foundation •or "baby" teeth. They are partly formed before a child is born and begin to appear when a baby is about 6 months old. Eruption is usually completed at 2 1/2 years. Normally, they are lost by the age of 12. Because the foundation teeth have impor- tant duties to perform during the first 12. years of life, they should have the best attention and care. They should not be con- sidered as temporary teeth as each has a role to play. At six years of age the first permanent molars appear inlniediately behind the baby molars—forming a cornerstone for the do • 'fPf4r Ilk development and placement of the per- manent teeth to follow. A change in IOCation Or movement of the six -wear molars, due to permaturc loss of the baby molars, could result in crooked teeth. Aside from their vital chewing and guid- ing functions the baby teeth help the normal development of the jaw. Normally, there are 32 second or perman- ent teeth. The loss of an early second- ary tooth may cause other teeth to shift position. This shifting could destroy the • natural form of the face and even the good appearance of a child. The first permanent molars .should be examined by a dentist just as soon as they erupt in the mouth. They, as well as the other permanent teeth, should be pre- served throughout life if proper care is taken. Teeth arc to keep for a lifetime. DonP go! bilion People who buy gadgets to protect themselves from mosquito bites, may find themselves being bitten — figuratively and literally. Research by university microbiology and parasitology departments in Canada .and the United States have shown that elec- tronic mosquito repellers are of little value. They repudiated claims by the manufacturers thatthe devices could emit sounds which repel female mosquitoes. Seems that there's just no such thing as a sound which will deter those hungry females from completing their task of get- ting a daily supply of blood from human targets. The best protection is to wear protec- tive clothing, apply insectrepellent or burn the inexpensive coils which release an in- secticide. As fear of encephalitis grows, con- sumers should heed the words of the ex- perts and obviously not those who would try to gain from marketing items which are lit- tle value. • by Cathy McKinley I had thought by bad luck during the Bayfield Centennial was mere coincidence, but now I'm not so sure. My luck over the fair weekend here in Zurich wasn't much better. Actually, it started earlier than the fair. 1 have wanted to try sailing for a long time now and 'finally a friend in Grand Bencl got his boat in the water and was willing to take a group of US sailing. As you all know Saturday .was fair day but we thought perhaps we might go sailing in the morning and still .give me time to get to Zurich for the parade at 12:30. Well, I had no trouble slaking the parade because I never got to go sailing. On Fri- day night, someone stole the boat out of Grand Bend harbour. Now you might think I got the day wrong because as you recall Friday night was the night of the big rain storm. Well the crooks who took the boat were a little too much under the weather to notice the impending storm and took the boat out late in the afternoon. They were out on the lake when the - storm hit and were more than a little scared. They foundered ashore with the help of some cottagers about 10 miles 'up the lake around Port Franks and luckily did little damage to .the boat. However, being rather shaken up over their experience and not thinking any too clearly, they told the cottagers who rescued them where they worked and what they did aid that while they did not own the boat they had permission to use it. They then fled the scene leaving the boat on the shore. The cottagers didn't particularly like this situation so they phoned the OPP who had been notified by my friend of the theft. Thev put two and two together and decided they had found the missing boat and the thieves. Meanwhile 1 was trying to do a good job of covering the Zurich fair. While it seemed a success as tar as most people were concerned and there was good attendance through out the day, there seemed to be a general lack of organization as far as many of the -activities were con- cerned. The cattle show was a disappointment for me as the total number of entries was around 15. However, it did start on time and was well run. My problem here was the pet show. It was supposed to start while the cattle show was still going so I had to keep running back and forth between the arena and the cattle judging. The pet show however began almost an hour late much to the annoyance of the many children who had their pets all ready to go at two o'clock. It seems someone printed one time in the fair booklet and gave another time to the judge. Meanwhile the baby show had started and being in tw•o places at the same time is very difficult: Of course my flash failed to go off. I even tried putting the flash on manual and operating it at the same time as my camera but as the flash had to be on at exactly the sante time as the camera is clicked it is very difficult to avoid a 'click -flash' or a 'flash - click' rather than a 'c1i-flash.' Perhaps the biggest confusion encountered at the fair happened at the official opening. Not many of you saw this I'm afraid because besides my- self and those taking part there wore only four or five specta- tors. Why? Because while the parade lined up on the ball diamond and everyone seemed to congregate there, the stage for the official opening was over in the mud where the horse show was to take place. It *as •a while before those doing the official opening could find the stage and the mud was not -exactly encouraging. To top it all off, those on stage had their backs to the fair where most of the people were arid spoke to an empty field. However, as far as the fair went, for most people it was a good time and i don't suppose too many people even noticed the disorganization. It does seem to' be a good idea to have the fair in the summer and attendance was good. As far as my boat ride goes, we went to Port Franks to sail the boat home on Sunday at about 6:30 p.in. but there wasn't enough wind to sail so we had to use the motor. There was also 0 good deal of cleaning to be done on the boat as sand had been washed aboard and the thieves had left everything Published Each Wednesday By J.W. Eedy Publications Ltd.
