ge of majority card regvired now
Consumer minister Sidney
Handleman has announced that
liquor store employees have been
told to accept only official age of
majority cards as identification
where there is any doubt about
the age of prospective youthful
purchasers .
"As far as I'm concerned, no
other form of identification
currently in use is suitable or
acceptable," Mr. Handleman
said. "A driver's license or social
security card is easily borrowed,
whereas the age of majority card
incorporates a photograph of the
hearer."
Application forms for the cards
are available at Liquor Control
Board of Ontario outlets,
Brewers Retail stores, most
licensed premises and by a
written or telephone request to
the Liquor Licence Board of
Ontario,
The procedure for obtaining
age of majority cards is similar
to applying for a passport.
Completed applications, bearing
the signature of a guarantor,
must be returned together with a
passport-sizephotograph and a $2
fee.
The staff at all liquor stores has

been instructed to provide
assistance to individuals who
require help in completing the
forms, Mr. Handleman said.
More than 7,000 of the cards,
which were introduced in Ontario
in 1973, have been issued to date.
Initially, the cards were intended
to provide proof if age in,licensed

No need to hoard
your mason jar lids
If consumers don't stop hoard-
ing mason -jar replacement lids
as they come on the market
there could be -a shortage for
this year's canning season, report
food specialists at the Ontario
Food Council,
Last summer's shortage of
lids left many consumers at a
loss as to how to preserve the
abundant supply of Ontario fruits
and vegetables.
This year, well over twice as
.many lids are being manufactur-
ed in Ontario and large quantities
are also being imported. Yet the
lids are disappearing quickly
from store shelves.
"If every consumer purchases
even twice the amount that she
or he really needs, the demand is
doubled. Obviously, if this
hoarding continues, it won't
take long to create a drastic
shortage," says the Ontario
Food Council's food specialists.
Purchase just as many lids as
you think you will need for this
year and leave the rest for your
neighbors, Otherwise your store
manager may he forced to limit
the amount sold to each customer
until the supply and demand
even out somewhat.
All reports indicate that the
supply of lids will be more than
adequate for this year's canning
season, so there is no need for
panic buying. The bulk of the
supply has yet to hit the market
since most manufacturers con-
sider mid-July as the beginning
of the busy canning season. .
