Hanging .plants add Iife and beauty
Hanging baskets filled with
plants will add color, life and
beauty to your home both inside
and out. "They do, however,
require a lot of attention if the
plants are to be grown success.
fully," says Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture and Food horticultur-
ist, D.B. McNeill.
There are many types of con-
tainers in wood, plastic, wire
and ceramics available for hang-
ing pots. Select a container with
drainage holes to prevent over
watering. To provide adequate
drainage, make sure you use a
loose soil mixture.
If you are going to hang your
plants outside, wait until the
warm weather arrives, advises
Mr. McNeill. Also, make sure
they are well established in their
baskets with good roots and new
growth. If there is a frost warn-
ing given or low temperatures
expected, bring the plants inside.
Cool winds and temperatures
below 13 degrees C (55 degress
F) may cause injury to the plants.
Hanging baskets require care-
ful watering. Too little water
results in a check in growth,
shedding of the leaves and un-
sightly plants with dull, unattrac-
tive foliage. Too much water
causes a lack of oxygen in the
soil, injuring the roots and leaves,
and many eventually kill the
plant.
There is no set formula for how
often you should water your
plants. It depends on the.temper-
ature, humidity anti light in the
room as well as the type of plant.
kind of soil, age of the plant.
rate of growth, and the size and
type of container. Generally
the soil should he kept moist but
not wet at all times.
When watering, wet the soil
right to the bottom of the pot and
do not water again until the
plants show signs of needing it.
Water early in the day so that
plants are not left saturated over-
night.
If you are going to water the
,plants by placing the pot in a
shallow pan of water, keep a
close eye on the soil surface.
The practice of regularly leaving
the plants in water until the top
surface of soil is moist sometimes

results in a crystalline deposit

come toxic to the plant. To avoid
this buildup, water the plants
from the top once every two
weeks.
Use a liquid or water-soluable
fertilizer every two weeks. Once
the plant has become established
