Slugs and snails cause serious damage
Mysterious damage to flowers,
vegetables, or any green succul-
ent home garden plants may
be caused by slugs or snails,
according to horticultural exp-
erts in the 1a1yr1 and garden
section of Canadian Industries
Limited agricultural chemicals
division.
Slugs and snails cone out in
the evening and feed at night,
and they may be found all over

the area. the heat
of the day. they take cover and -
mav' be found under small bits
of debris which protects them
from the sun's rays.
They will attack any succul-
ent green growth, but they are
particularly destructive on soft -

Apartments
ready by
November
By fall, the apartment building
in Hensall adjacent to the Bendex
plant should be pretty well com-
plete. This news comes from
town clerk Bob Heil,
The new building, which will
be joined later by a similar com-
plex is well under construction
now, the first floor having been
erected. The work seems to be
proceeding at a less than average
pace because the builders arc
waiting for sewers, which have
not been taken into that area as
of yet. Town officials are optimis-
tic that the completion date will
be late September, but Romstone
Ltd. of London. the firm con-
struction the apartments say
November is a more .realistic
time. Again the sewers are the
reason.
The apartment building now
and its twin, soon to be started
have a capacity of 72 units total.

SOON FORGOTTEN
Many a voter has come to the
conclusion that most political
promises are just as frail as
New Year's resolutions.
iblc on the plants, spend a few
minutes looking in possible hid-
ing places for slugs or snails.
A few minutes of searching
with a flashlight at night-time
is also a good way to confirm if
slugs Or snails are the probl-
em.
According to CIL spokesmen.,
one of the most effective prod-
ucts for their control is "CIL
Slug Killer Pellets." These
should he scattered along path-
ways and around plants and
seedlings where slugs and
snails are numerous or where
damage from them is evident.
If the soil is dry, sprinkle with
water and then scatter the pellets
about. Evening is the best time
for application,
Slugs and snails are strongly
attracted to these Pellets, and
they are killed when they crawl
over or eat them. The pellets
are dissolved by rain, so do not
apply then if rain is forecast.
They normally disappear in a
couple of days. They can also be
placed in small mounds and prot-
ected with a tlat stone or a
weighted shingle or pie plate.
While they are relatively safe to
human beings in relation to tox-
icity, dogs can bet attracted to
them, and pets should not be
allowed in the area when the
pellets are in use.
In using any pest -control
product, it is important that the
directions on the label regard-
ing use, storage, and handling
be followed carefully.
