dance
a sellout
The Pioneer ball was held
Saturday evening and the tickets
were sold out early in the after-
noon. Tickets were sold to 700
people, but before the end of the
evening there seemed to be many
more than that present in the
crowded arena.
Some of those attending the
ball wore costumes from early
years giving the arena an at-
mosphere of years gone by.
The highlight of the evening
was the beard contest. Those
participating had registered for
the competition in January and
had been faithfully growing and
trimming their beards since that
time.
Winner of the longest beard
was Pat Graham of Bayfield.
Melvin Jewell of Bayfield had
the most colorful beard with Bob
Anderson of Brussels having the
bushiest and Keith Bunn of Bay-
field the best trimmed. Judges
for the contest were Bob Merner
Zurich, Ruth Stanley, Goderich
township and Lloyd Makins,
Bayfield.

Hedge pruning promotes good growth
Pruning your hedges at this
time of year will promote healthy
growth, remove dead or damaged
wood, rejuvenate old shrubs and
encourage or, train them into
whatever form or shape you
want, says Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture and Food horticul-
turistD.B. McNeill.
Newly set deciduous plants
should be pruned severely to
promote new dense growth near
the ground level. However,
although some initial trimming
for balance and height may be
required, young evergreens do
not require drastic pruning as
they are usually well -branched
from the beginning.
To keep a healthy, full -looking
hedge, prune it so that it is
wider at the bottom than at the
top, advises Mr. McNeill. This
gives it a better chance of remain-
ing dense right to the ground,
since the lower portions will get
as much light and sun as the top.
It also lessens the chance of
snow injury when winter sets
in.
Pruning and trimming should
be carried out as the hedge
grows. For both deciduous and
evergreen hedges, gradually rai-
se the pruning height until the
plant reaches the desired height,
and then keep it there. Always
prune to a side branch or side
bud so that a dead stub won't
be left. Correct bulges by trim -

ming them a little closer in, and
fill out indentations by trimming
such patches only lightly.
The number of shearings the
hedge will require depends on
whether it grows quickly or
slowly. Trimming a hedge too
often reduces the leaf surface
drastically and limits the supply
of plant food available, eventually
weakening the hedge. "Moit
hedges," says Mr. McNeill,
"will require only two or three
trimmings during the summer to
keep them neat and attractive.
