Ask for chance
The change of ownership of any enter-
prise invariably causes some problems.
When the enterprise is a community's
newspaper, the scope of influence is per-
haps further reaching than some other
businesses. .
In this issue, the first published under
the ownership of J.W. Eedy Publications,
we wish to reiterate some comments made
in the Citizens News last week.
Foremost is the fact that the Citizens
News will continue to be published as a
separate newspaper. While some of the
direction will originate from those in a
supervisory capacity elsewhere, the news
gathering, photography, advertising sales
and much of the technical work on the
Citizens News will be done in Zurich by
Citizens News employees.
As property owners and taxpayers in
the community, Eedy Publications now has
a stake in the success of the newspaper
and therefore in the overall economic
picture of the community.
We at the Citizens News believe that
the staff which has been assigned to produce
the- newspaper each week is a competent
group, well able to provide the community
with a journal of which they can be proud.
Naturally, there is some apprehension in
this time of change. All we ask is a chance
to prove our intentions. Given that chance,
we assure readers and advertisers alike,
every effort will be made to earn the oppor-
tunity provided us.
Krazy Days agar!
The second of a series of six "Krazy
Days" weekends takes place in Zurich
this weekend and if it matches the first
such event held in May, it should be lots
of fun.
"Krazy Days" is a promotion by the
Zurich Business Association designed to
provide bargains and entertainment for
those shopping in Zurich.
Most of the people in the area got involv-
ed in the first "Krazy Days" in May and
scurried from store to store as Ron Heinrich
announced the "time specials" over the
public address system. The merchants
too, learned from the experience and are
preparing more extra bargains for the
weekend. In some cases last time, the mer-
chants just weren't ready for the rush of
customers that resulted.
The free pony rides were a big hit last
time and will likely be repeated sometime
later in the summer. This weekend, the
merchants are sponsoring free roller skat-
ing at the Zurich arena.
The success of "Krazy Days" so far has
proved two points for the merchants.
First, it pays to advertise and second,
it's much more effective to get together as
a group and promote the community rather
than have each attempt to do the job alone.

I think most of you know me, or at least of me (which is not
necessarily the same thing) but for those of you who are not
quite sure just which McKinley I am, a small introduction
may be in order.
I may as well begin by answering the "three most asked
questions" I have so far encountered: yes, niy father's name
is Anson; yes, I do look like my mother and no, I am not the
one who married Dale Ratcliffe and settled on the Goshen -
that is my older sister Karen.
So, in case you are trying to figure out which one I am, that
will at least give you something to go on. I have a BAA in
Journalism from Ryerson in Toronto and have been working
on the Zurich Citizens News for some months now. I must
say, believe it or not, Zurich beats the heck out of living in
Toronto.
One of the most discouraging things I have run into the
past few weeks was an Ontario Municipal Board hearing held
in Varna last week. The topic of the hearing was a proposed
subdivision by Phil Durand to be located on Lot 10, Lake
Road West Concession, Stanley Township. Both Stanley
township and Huron County council passed the application
with some minor adjustments, however the Ministry of
Housing wanted the subdivision made smaller. Why?
Because they felt it was too large to be within the County
plan. They did not seem to care that the very people who
made up the county plan, that is Gary Davidson and the
others at the Huron County planning board, decided that •
it was within the County plan. Oh no, the ministry knows
better.
It took Mr. Durand's lawyers a year to get the application
as far as the OMB hearing. All seemed well, except for one
tiny detail. The ministry, after blocking the application
even after approval by the township and county involved,
decides not to bother showing up. The application by Phil'
Durand was of course approved, but it kind of makes you
wonder just what goes on in the Ministry of Housing.
The Buffaloburger Fest in Grand Bend was well attended
over the weekend and the burugers so popular they ran out of
buffalo meat. I tried two (or was it three) of them over
the two day fest, and while I wouldn't want then every day
they were all right for a change.
However, I feel a few changes would be in order before
the third buffalo burger fest takes place next year. More
security is definitely needed as too many people were in the
tent and fenced off area at one time. More johns are needed
definitely and they should be located within the complex it-
self. This year you pretty well had to go to the hath house on
• the beach and the lineups were sometimes dangerously
long. Also 1 think it would be very wise to set up at Least
two bars rather than the one this year. Congestion at the
north end of the tent where the bar was located was terrible -
if you managed to secure a glass of beer your chances of
getting back through the crowd safely were just about nil.
While accidents do happen, not everyone is happy when a
beer is spilled on them. A little more preparation would
definitely be in order to control the whole situation a bit"
better -things almost got out of hand this year.
