The sixth annual Hensall
fiddlers contest will be held at
the Hensall arena this weekend
and the competition promises to
be tough.
There are 8 different fiddl-
ing classes and three stepdanc-
ing classes with cash prizes
varying from $10 to $800 for a
total of $2,945. Eighty to ninety
participants from all over
southwestern Ontario are expect-
ed with contestants from Wind-
sor, Sudbury, Ottawa and Hamil-
ton to name a few. One of the
oldest contestants is Elber
Romphf of Parkhill who is 83
years old. The fiddlers must
obey all rules set out, one of
which is they must play "accept-
ed old-time type" tunes.
Eliminations will be held
in the Exeter arena beginning
Friday June 18 at 7 p.n1. Ad-
mission for adults is $2.00,
children 50(t.
Playdowns begin Saturday,
June 19 at 7 p.m. with presenta-
tions and dancing from 11 p.m.
About 200 campsites for tents and
trailers will be available in the
park right behind the arena.
About 100 of these have already
been reserved, which indicates
the park could be filled to over-
flowing. The Hensall Kinsmen
Club, who is sponsoring the
show, expect about 3000 people
to attend over the weekend.
The Ward Allen memorial
trophy will be presented to the
best fiddler in the show. The
trophy was donated six years ago
by the family of Ward Allen,
a well-known fiddler who grew
up in Kirkton area and played
over the radio in Wingham.
