Grade Seven and Eight
Toronto Excursion
By Barbara Rader
The grade seven • and eight
class of Zurich Public School
went on a trip' to Toronto on
Wednesday and Thursday of
last week. We started the long
journey at 6:45 and arrived at
the Toronto Airport at 10:00.
Two guides gave us a complete
tour of the airport and an air-
plane. We went on a surrey
ride 'which is the transportation
they use to get from one end
of the air terminal to the other.
Also, we went on a planemate
which is an enclosed vehicle that
passengers ride to board a plane
when the airport is crowded or
the airplane too far away to walk
to, This air conditioned vehicle,
that has comfortable seats and
small windows, took us to a
DC -8 stretch aircraft which we
boarded. Once inside, we toured
it and had a chance to see the
cockpit where the airplane is
manned. Lastly. we visited the
baggage room where everything
is done by computer. Just
before we boarded the bus, we
went through a security check
where everyone was checked for
weapons.
Next stop was the magnifi-
cent 98 -room Casa Loma. It
was actually a castle built as the
result of a vivid dream or im.a.ain-
action. Chandeliers and magni-
ficent oak carvings were every-
where. An extensive library had
over 10,000 volunies and covered
one whole wall and one-half from
floor to ceiling. The view from.
the two towers was breathtaking
and no one got too close to the
edge.
After leaving Casa Lona, we
visited the Royal: Ontario Muse -
St. Boniface

over. News Photo
uni. Here there were displays
of rocks and stuffed animals.
A few university students in
the museum sketched pictures
of famous people's heads which
were depleted in cement.
After a fulfilling supper, we
visited the McLaughlin Planetar-
ium. We entered a domed
enclosure where hundreds of
seats were set in a circle. These
chairs tilted back so we were
gazing at the ceiling. Then
slowly the lights dimmed and the
stars appeared. it was like lying
out under the sky at night. The
movie "Space The Final Front-
ier" lasted three quarters of an
hour and then we took the subway
to our next port of call, Commerce
Court. The shifting doors of the
subway made everyone run in
and out like a herd of elephants.
Commerce Court was a 57
storey building, which we as-
cended by an elevator, which
made our ears pop, until we
reached the observation galley.
The walls facing. Toronto, were
all glass. Looking eta over the
vast expanse of land made uti
feel dizzy. Tov ears and tiny
blotches resembling people were
shuffling on the street below us.
A man up here told us where cer-
tain buildings were and said it'
you fell out of a window, the fall
wouldn't hurt you. but the sudden
stop would. Then we took (he
subway hack to York University
where we were staying.
Following breakfast the next
day we headed for the Parliament
Buildings. Jack Riddell gave us
a welcoming speech and then we
were handed over to a guide.
She took us up carpeted stairs
to the Legislative Assembly room.
Here we were told all about
the government and what went
on, A brief tour followed and
everyone was given souvenirs.
Everyone boarded. the bus and
we departed for the Metro Zoo.
Small pathways or roads lead
from one section to another.
Different titles were given to the
different sections according to
the animals found there. (i.e.
Africa, Australia)
The group then Icft for Ontario
Place. Arriving .we crossed a
wooden planked bridge that went
over a highway. Soon we were
in Ontario Place heading for a
building called Reelections. Stu-
mbling through darkness and
mirrors we finally came to a
room that had white panelling.
As we jumped up and down a
light suddenly Clashed. Stepping
forwards and turning; around we
saw our Outline ciepicting the
position we had been in when the
light flashed. A new experience
for us was a paddle boat ride.
Sore seats and muscles resulted
from this excursion. Going up
a ramp, we entered the cine -
sphere. A six storey screen was
set in front of us while we relaxed
in plush seats. Suddenly, it
seemed Iike we were zooming on
a roller coaster, rushing down a
stream and speeding over a wind-
ing road, After coming out of
there, we could only lean over the
railing till our stomachs settled..
Of course a visit to Ontario
Place wouldn't be complete with-
out a visit to Children's Village.
This was the most fun. Then we
were on TV live from the Ontario
Place stadium on the Wintario
Lottery. Two people in the aud-
ience were winners.
Our departure was at 9:45 p.m.
and we arrived at the school at
12:45.
All in all, this trip was very
exhilarating and exciting. We
think it was well worth going.
