The Progressive Conservative Association for the riding of Huron -Middlesex held its annual meeting last Wednesday night in the Dashwood community centre. About 65 people attended the annual meeting including guest speaker Lorne Henderson, MPP for Lambton. President Elmer Hayter. felt many farmers who might otherwise have atten- ded were taking advantage of the weather to finish planting their corn. "We can't really blame them," said Mr. Hayter, "It's time the corn was in and when the weather is right you have to get it planted." Treasurer Lorne Kleinstiver gave the year's financial report, the first since the conception of the riding of Huron -Middlesex. The association's total receipts were $6,262.30 with total dis- bursements being $5,220.24. This along with $301.57 left from the campaign fund and a subsidy of $4,564.20 from the provincial government leaves a total of $6,947.93. However, the $1,000 fee from the auditors has not been paid yet and there are also several advertising accounts still out- standing. "We're not as rich as you might think," said Mr. Klein- stiver. "We're going to have to get busy and raise some money somehow." Two changes were made to the constitution of the association. One lowered the number of days a person must be a member prior to a nomination meeting in order to vote from 14 days to seven days. The other change was that notice of the annual meeting need only be advertised seven days in advance rather than the 21 days previously. This is an attempt to cut down advertising costs. ' Jim Hayter made a presenta- tion concerning the PC's pro- vincial membership drive. Mem- bership fees will be set at $3.50, $1.50 going to the provincial association to cover advertising fees, the remainder to the riding association. Next year the entire fee will go to the riding. The election of officers was held with few changes made over last year's executive. President Elmer Hayter of Stanley; , first vice-president is Betty Cardno of Seaforth; secretary is Mrs. Ruth Hill and chief financial officer is Lorne Kleinstiver. In addition, six vice-presidents of equal rank were named. These are Bill Amos of McGillivray George Cuddy of Kerwood, Gerry Ginn of Goderich township, Oliver Jacques of Hensall, Joe Murphy of Clinton and Norman Parsons of. Exeter. Publicity chairman George Tieman told the News this week that several new features are being added to some of the attractions which proved popular during the first five years of the Days. The Saturday afternoon parade has • proved to be one of the biggest in Western Ontario in recent years and this year's committee will be trying to entice more floats and entries. Ruth Ann Merner, Mike Tieman and Paul Salmon are on the parade committee. Mrs. Merner hopes to have Pirie Mitchell and Peaches of CFPL television appear in the parade and assist in running off a pet show after the parade. The theme of the parade is "Fantasy Land". Other animals in the pet show,, shouldn't have to much opposi- tion from Peaches if she is in the same mood as a few months ago when appearing at the ex- hibition hockey game at Huron. Park. Peaches spent most of the night sleeping in the penalty box. A new Saturday morning at- traction should bring out lots of boys and girls. A soap box derby is being held for the first time. A midway company from Woodstock has been booked to supply four or five carnival rides for both days. The Friday night talent show is again expected to draw lots of interest fom area amateur per- formers. . in charge are Jean Ford and Doug Riddell. Sauerkraut and sausages will again be the main part of the dinner and supper menu. It is expected sausages on a bun will be sold later on both evenings. A dance will be held Saturday night to wind up the two days of proceedings and a refreshment tent will be on the grounds with Anthony Martene and Jack Cockwell in charge.. Hubert Miller is overall Frieds- burg Days chairman with Herb Piper as assistant. Doreen Webb is the secretary and Glenn Webb will handle the duties of trea- surer. Gertie Stade and Vesta Miller are in charge of souvenirs. While committee heads have been appointed publicity chair- man Tiernan is quick to point out that many other volunteers are needed to make the 1976 Frieds- burg Days a real success.
