On the occasion of the SOth

taining former members to a
dinner at Dashwood Community
Centre on Friday, May 2S at
6 p.m. While signing the Guest.
Book members and guests were
presented with corsages and.
enjoyed reminiscing during the
social hour.
During dinner Mrs. Letta
Taylor, founder and first presi-
dent was presented with a gift.
A moment of silence was then
observed in honour of deceased
members: Amelia Klumpp;

ther; Flora Oestreicher; Verna
Burke; Mrs. Moffatt.

crime are among the main bene-
ficiaries of profit from porno-
graphic material. He asked the
Attorney -General to confirm sus-
picions that Capital Distributing
Co. Canada Ltd, and its owners
"are known or suspected by
police to have some association
with organized dime". Capital
Distributing, a subsidiary of
U.S. owned Capital Distributors,
headed by John Santangelo
of Derby, Conn., U.S., has been
charged with distributing obscene
publications. The Attorney
General indicated he had ne
specific information which would
link the distribution of porono-
graphic material to organized
crime.
I further pursued the Better
Beef lease arrangment with the
Ontario Government, for the
Essex Packers operation at the
Guelph Correctional Centre Pla-
nt. I asked the Minister of
Labour, Dr. Bette Stephenson,
that in view of the fact that it
now appears that the Minister
of Correctional Services, inad-
vertently misled the House, when
he said that the lay-off at Essex
Packers was for the reason of
taking inventory. This reason is
now seen to be incorrect as there
was no inventory to take other
than a small quantity of hams in
storage in theoUnited States and
$100,000 worth of supplies in the
Hamilton plants which had al-
ready been accounted for, and in
view of the fact that the real
reason for the lay-off is Better
Beef's attempt to circumvent the
provisions of the Employment
Standards Act. The Act requires
that a lessee deemed to be a
successor corporation is legally
liable for severance pay. I
asked that the Minister firstly
investigate this manoeuvre on
the part of Better Beef, to ensure
that the employees who were
laid off will receive severance
pay. Secondly, I asked, that she
confer with the Minister of
Correctional Services to deter-
mine if this action on the part
of Better Beef could not be con-
sidered to be sufficient grounds
for terminating the assignment
of the lease to the DeJonge
Brothers for the Guelph Abbatoir.
The Minister glibly replied that
in response to my passionate
dissertation, she could only say
"yes" and "yes".
It is my understanding that the
Minister met with the DeJonge
Brothers the following day.
